Longtime NB shoe-user, this is my favorite!, September 6, 2010
This review is from: New Balance Women's WR904 Running Shoe (Apparel)
I'm an endurance/long-distance runner (marathons and run 5-6 times per week), trail runner, city runner, treadmills, ETC. I have a neutral foot (no over/under pronation) and my running gait is fairly normal/efficient (no major injuries, and NB are the only shoes that never led to possible long-term injuries). My first pair of running shoes 8+ years ago were NB 769 (or whatever 76- model they were on back then...). I tried Asics, Brooks, and Adidas, but I keep returning to NB and end up making the other shoes my "back-up" or "gym" shoes because I had problems. I have owned NB in these series: 730s (OK for shorter city runs and treadmill), 760s (OK for city runs), 850s (liked for long runs on pavements but too heavy!!!), 1020s (loved for pavement long runs but so $$$$$), and recently these 904s and the 905 equivalent for road running. (By the way, I don't think I'll buy the 905s again because they were a lot of $ for a shoe that was awesomely lightweight but wore out very quickly, and I also realized they do not double up very well for use on any type of trails... :( ). I also recently bought special trail running minimalist shoes NB 100, which I love for my long off-road runs and races -- great tracking and lightweight, perfect for those crazy and adventurous trail runners.
So--why exactly do I like these shoes, the 904s, the best of all?
- fit well right out of the box, on the very first run I had that feeling like I'd already run 100 miles in them.
- super lightweight, I never feel like I'm dragging bricks on feet. You can't beat the weight of these for a full running shoes -- only the minimalist shoes weigh less.
- the traction on the bottom is great for the majority of trail running I do/have done! In fact, I only bought the NB 100s to try something new and different, NOT as a replacement for these.
- I wear these on EVERY surface. I trained for a marathon entirely on trails, did track workouts in these shoes, and then a few months later I ran the marathon on pavement in the same pair.
- my shoes did not wear out like other shoes (including NB) where the bottoms start to go to mush/flatten out and my feet start hurting. Nope, the first thing to go in these, after 6-8 months of using them hard on trails, were wholes by the toes :x which I attribute more to the style of trailing running I did than to the fabric... the bottoms eventually went about a month later and then I had to stop using them.
Anyways, if that doesn't help you make your decision, I'm currently wearing a 700 series, the NB 100s, and tossing the wornout 905s for another pair of these 904s. I have another marathon in three weeks and want to be well-prepared!

Solid shoes, October 28, 2009
Shoes fit great. True to size and width. They did require a little breaking in, but they were great after a couple usages. They are very lightweight, and they provide great arch support. The colors are a bit crazy--if you like to match your shoes to your clothes, you will have a hard time with these. I usually don't match my shoes and workout clothes, so it doesn't bother me, but if you like to match, I would not get these shoes.
