A New Beginning for Boyzone member,
By Mark P Buckner (Dickerson, Maryland United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: New Beginning (Audio CD)
The first solo effort from Stephen Gately of popular UK group Boyzone is a solid piece of work. I enjoyed every track on the CD which rarely happens for me. Stand out cuts include the title track, a cover of "Bright Eyes", and "Do Without Me". The CD consists of 13 tracks. Gately had some success in the US with the song "No Matter What" which appeared on the soundtrack to the Julia Roberts movie "Notting Hill". As more people discover him I am sure he will find greater success. Gately is probably most notable for being the first boy in a boy band to come out of the closet as a gay man. His music has universal appeal.

Great CD - Great Solo Effort,
By World Traveller (Westminster, CO USA) - See all my reviews

All of the other reviews are dead on. This is a great new CD from Gately. Out of all 13 songs, there were only 2 that I didn't really care for and they weren't bad. If you like Boyzone, you'll love this even more. All of the songs are different enough to keep from sounding like the same old thing. I purchased the new CD from Ronan Keating, and I'll take Stephen's CD over it anytime. When reading the CD liner, Stephen has his hand in the writing of almost every song. It's easy to tell that his coming out was the force behind New Beginning and who wouldn't believe that a few of the other songs were definitely inspired by his significant other Eloy.I can't wait for his next effort and the next Boyzone release.

Definitely one to buy!,
By Chris (Columbus, OH USA) - See all my reviews

Finally an entire album of just Stephen! Every song on the album is great. It's everything we'd expect from Steo. The more you listen to it, the harder it is to turn it off. A refreshing change from the music on American radio and MTV. If only the rest of America knew what a great talent Stephen is. This album is a wonderful showcase of a great voice. The songs are a good combination of upbeat "sing-in-your-car-at-the-top-of-your-lungs" tunes to the beautiful ballads Boyzone has provided us over and over. This is definitely a CD for everyone to own. If you know Steo, you already own it. If you don't know Steo, buy this album. You won't regret it. And, yes Steo, I Believe!

Boy from across the pond,
By John Juergens (Minneapolis, MN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: New Beginning (Audio CD)
As soon as I heard that this cd was available...I bought it and never looked back. One of the Boyzone lead vocalists went ahead and made went solo while the group is still shooting up the charts. It's sad that Stephen hasn't gotten more exposure in the U.S. American radio just keeps blaring out the same monotonous tone that it has for years. With no sign of stopping. I am beginning to think that we don't know any better. I like Stephen's sound. His songs are up beat and positive, and his voice is so clear and crisp it could cut through any bad day you could be having. And its nice to see vocalists writing their own material. No offense to Max Martin and others like him. The work that Stephen has done on this recording is the kind that makes you glad to be alive. The only think wrong is that it only has 12 tracks. :o ) And it would have been smashing to hear him do a duet with Eloy. Now we can hope to see him do a tour here. Thanks Stephen....we needed this one!

Incredible CD by an Incredible Person/Performer,
By Elaine Wood (Westbrook, ME USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: New Beginning (Audio CD)
I am a 54 year old woman who happened by chance to see Stephen performing with Boyzone on PBS on an Andrew Lloyd Webber 50th Birthday Celebration. I have since come to find out more about this incredible young man and his passion for his music and his fans and this passion is conveyed in his first solo album. The song I Believe which is featured in the hit film Billy Elliot is a song that just makes you feel so good and when I saw this film and heard it sung at the end over the credits, I was amazed once again. This first album by Stephen is an incredible piece of work and I certainly hope it won't be the last. Bravo, Stephen on a job very well done!!!

A very pleasant surprise.....,
By Dave Beards (Sydney Australia) - See all my reviews

I must admit that I have never been a Boyzone fan and quite fankly I found Ronan's solo efforts rather dull, so when a friend lent me a copy of Boyzone member Stephen Gately's debut solo CD I was rather skeptical. I was pleasantly surprised. This CD is filled with wonderful pop sounds and Stephen's sweet singing voice is used to full effect here. With several tracks cowritten by Stephen himself, the lyrics are basically dealing with his coming-out. A wonderful CD - I throughly recommend it.

Boyzone star shining,
By stephen Garry (Manchester England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: New Beginning (Audio CD)
At last Stephen gets to shine. After practicaly carrying the rest of boyzone Stephen has at last branched out on his own, and what can you say, other than why didnt he do it earlier. The title track from the album was a brilliant first release, with obvious reasons for its choice. The second single and my personal favouite is I Believe which is also on the sound track to the film Billy Elliot. The rest of the album is also of the same quality, and unlike Ronan Stephen has had a hand in writing his own material and hasnt had to rely on the likes of Bryan Adams to gain some success and a larger fan base. The album range shows what stephen is capable of, as it has uptempo songs and ballads which stephens voice easily adapts to. This is easily the best boyzone solo release so far, lets hope disappointing sales dont put Stephen in line for the axe as his music is a break from the norm.

One of our most tallented singers strutts his stuff!,
By "tallented" (Sussex, Haywards Heath) - See all my reviews
This review is from: New Beginning (Audio CD)
This album has been one of the most inspiring pieces of music that I have ever heard. It not only conveys a huge tallent that has and still shines through with Boyzone, but also the corage and ability to prove himself as a solo artist.Although Boyzone are still together, this album proves his enourmous ability to sing and to atrract the critical aclaim that it deserves. The songs, some partly written by Gately, show an insight into his incredable tallent and prove nothing more than a success. Although not all the songs are pop based, the majority are, but subtely broken down by ballads also wonderfuly sung. If nothing else, this album proves what a success his new beginning has been, not only in his Solo carear whils still being part of the internationaly sucessful Boyzone, but in keeping his fans support over a troubled, but sucessful year. You have our full support steo. XXX Buy this now!

Great CD. Stephen has a huge voice, as shown in his first solo single, a double A side with New Beginning and Bright Eyes [Art Garfunkel cover]. This album is a truly worthy debut, and Steve has a great carreer ahead. The only downfall, though, is that his first solo song ever [Shooting Star, theme from Disney's movie Hercules] is absent [it may be found as B-Side to Boyzone's Baby Can I Hold You], as another song he has recorded, ABBA's Chiquitita [Found on the tribute ABBAMANIA]. Everything else is perfect: The voice, the ballads, the upbeat songs [yes, there are upbeat songs]... indeed a great debut, worth an american release [unfortunately it won't have one].

I find myself liking Stephen more and more. I bought this album and I love it. He may come from a "boy band" but his music and vocals are very mature and show great potential. I came across a song of his, that is not on this album, called "Shooting Star" and it just blew me away. I'm hoping he tries his luck in America because I would really love to hear more of him.
