4.0 out of 5 stars A Grand Start, July 14, 2000
This review is from: New Beginning Pt.1 (Audio CD)
When Stephen Gately came out in 1999, he was taken aback at the amount of support he received from members of his community. Needless to say, Boyzone have lost a large number of their female fans, but that hasn't seemed to have hurt album sales - their `By Request' CD was one of the UK's largest selling albums last year.

If Stephen thought that all this new found support for him and Eloy de Jong would result in massive sales of his debut solo effort, then he was more than proven wrong when both the album and this first single failed to create any sort of noticeable chart impact. Pity, because the first single `New Beginning' is actually much better than most of the stuff that Boyzone produced as a group. Stephen's voice is endearingly choir-boy-like as always, and the melody is infectious. The video for the song reveals the Stephen of year 2000 to be as likeable as ever. His new found life seems to have had a refreshing effect on his music and his appearance - hes grown more chubby-cheeked and radiant, and far more confident than during his term with Boyzone.

As a single, `New Beginning' is stunning. Gately's obvious vocal limitations have been taken into consideration - he doesn't do the high notes as often as he used to, and the instrumentation is lovely. Its a little bewildering why the song never reached No. 1 in the UK (it peaked at No. 3 and fell rapidly) because its far better than other songs that reached No. 1 in 2000 (`Lift me Up' by Geri Halliwell, for instance).

Stephen has a great solo career before him, if he retains the quality of music that his first single bears. For those in the US who haven't heard him, this is the best time to get into him - hes one of the UK's better talents, and it shows. And as the first single from his debut solo album, the singer should be proud of his creation. Love, it seems, does have a wonderful effect on an artist.

5.0 out of 5 stars A REAL New Beginning!, June 16, 2000
This review is from: New Beginning Pt.1 (Audio CD)
Well... as it was expected after the first Boyzone member released a sucessful hit [Ronan's song in the Notting Hill Soundtrack], another [and, let me say, more talented] member of the 7-year-old irish boy band delivers a great Debut.

New Beginning is a great song, with nice rhythm [no, it is not a love song!] and it features Steve's vocals that really amazed me, an old Boyzone fan. Maybe because he was never allowed to release all of his vocal potential before, you will be surprised too.

Just listen to the title track and you'll buy this single. Bright Eyes [the single's B-Side] is a terrific love song, melodic and it reminds me of his Boyzone time. There is also a remix of the title track [Love to Infinity Master Mix] and it is also good, yes. And following the recent european trend, the single also features the CD-Rom video for the song.

What makes this single worth more than a Boyzone's? Well, he has always been my favourite member, he's got the band's best voice and the songs get more 'real': not a remake of an old song, as most of the Boyzone's hits, and Steve talks about himself all the time: 'Seven years of waiting, seven years of holding on', he sings. Or: 'Gotta do what's in your heart, say what's on your mind, everybody, gotta be true to myself', referring to his recent comin' out.

Well, if you don't believe me yet, you have to listen to him singing. And maybe you'll realise that not all of the boy bands have members that are completely dumb, as it may seem nowadays. Some of them have great personalities, besides of the great talent.

5.0 out of 5 stars A success, November 4, 2000

Stephen Gately, formerly of Ireland's Boyzone starts a solo career. This song is one of his single's and it's such a great song. I love it. It starts off slow, making you believe that it's a ballad, but then it becomes up-tempo with a really good beat that makes you want to tap your feet or even get up and dance. What I've gotten from this song is that it's kinda his way of letting the public that he's ready for a "new beginning" away from Boyzone. Two thumbs up!

5.0 out of 5 stars GONE TOO SOON BUT HIS VOICE WILL LIVE FOREVER!, November 17, 2009
This review is from: New Beginning (Audio CD)
I was extremely shocked when I heard of Stephen's death last month! Didn't even realize that he had passed away until just recently! Unfortunately, here in the states we don't hear news of all the great stars from other countries!
It deeply saddens me! Stephen had a wonderful voice and his solo work was amazing as was his work with "Boyzone". I am so glad that Ronan Keating and his other bandmates from "Boyzone" have decided to definately continue with the future release that had been started prior to Stephen's passing! Some of the tracks already completed contain Stephen's vocals and the band plan on dedicating the release to their friend! At 33, his life was only beginning! Now he has a "NEW BEGINNING" as an Angel whose voice here on Earth will continue to entertain and enchant us always!
My deepest sympathy goes out to his family and friends! Especially to his fellow bandmates and his partner Andrew who must be devestated by the loss of such an amazing man! It is a shame that so many individuals here in the states had never been introduced to his work! At least I am able to continue to enjoy his music as I play his cds and watch him in concert as a member of "Boyzone" with my dvd collection! I am certain that he is now entertaining everyone in Heaven with his wonderful voice!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great voice finally come out, August 2, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: New Beginning Pt.1 (Audio CD)
The title song from this album is superb and it's been a long time since something so vocally strong has hit the pop mainstream. Anyone "catch" the Led Zeppelin sample in the ref? I was NEVER a Boyzone follower, so this album could really astonish a wider range of listeners. I think Stephen's venture apart from the Boy'z could well surpass Robbie Williams efforts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hoorah!, June 16, 2000
This review is from: New Beginning Pt.1 (Audio CD)
Bright Eyes (a cover of Simon and Garfunkel's theme for Watership Down: The Movie) is a great song, especially with Stephen's vocals. "New Beginning" is a bit of a departure from Boyzone's (and Stephen Gately's) usual style...it's more cool and tough than sweet balladish...which is quite nice. Also included is the MTV for New Beginning if you buy CD1 and a poster if you buy CD2 (it's an okay poster that my sister loves)
