New Beginnings is a paranormal romance that takes the readers on a fascinating adventure to uncover a mystery. Alex and John's ancestors want their story told. Throughout the story the reader is carried back and forth through time to learn the truth about these people that lived and died three hundred years earlier. As their story of love unfolds, a new love begins to grown
This is a moderately paced story that lets the mysteries it has to tell unfold slowly. The characters draw the readers into their lives and let them share in the love that grows between them. This is a story of love that lasts forever, even beyond the grave. I encourage readers to add New Beginnings by Pat McCain to their reading list.

Take one very pretty divorced grandmother, Alex, who goes to Scotland. Add a handsome Scotsman widower, John, who owns two cozy homes. Add Alex's bitchy flirt of a girlfriend, Sammy, who joins her, two spirits who appear from the past and a mixture of other American and Scottish characters and you have - the makings of a great novel, New Beginnings by Pat McCain.

Pat's knack for storytelling and her grasp of the Scottish language blend together for a fine romantic read set (mostly) in Scotland. The author's descriptions of setting, whether the city of Edinburgh or one of John's gardens, make the reader drool and long to be with the characters in that particular place. Details enhance the vicarious experiences without getting in the way of the overall atmosphere.

A mysterious couple from the past appears to Alex at unexpected times, sometimes a nuisance, sometimes a comfort, but always confounding. The reason for the appearances of Mairi especially haunts Alex as Alex tries to find the link with her past.

Alex is forced to come to terms with feelings for John, new feelings that she never experienced in her cold marriage. John is patient with Alex while showing himself as a man with tender emotions. Sammy, quite a sexy woman with a roving eye, decides to focus her attentions on John.

This is one must-have book for the reader of romance who enjoys the surreal Scottish setting, so different from our America.
