Editorial Reviews

Review

"I think the anthology is a great idea. The British public have been impressively generous in the early days after the disaster. Unfortunately, given the scale of the destruction, that generosity needs to be long-term, and many charities are worried that "charity fatigue" will set in. The anthology is a way of nudging people to continue giving over the long-term. Of course the book will sell when it is published in March, but hopefully it will continue to sell for months and months, providing funds for people on a long-term basis."- Tracy Chevalier

"It is a privilege to be in a position to offer our services in the name of such unfathomable need and it has been heartening to witness the quick and universal support of authors, publishers, agents, and booksellers." - Karen Rinaldi, Bloomsbury USA Publisher and Editorial Director

5.0 out of 5 stars What Great Fun...for a Great Cause., April 7, 2005
By
This review is from: New Beginnings: New Writing from Bestselling Authors to Aid Save the Children (Paperback)
If you're the kind of person who likes the whole "sampler" concept -- be it music, food, wine or even speed dating -- this delicious collection is a just what you're looking for. Each "chapter" provides an excerpt from an upcoming novel or collection by some of our very best writers. They range from cutting-edge literature (Margaret Atwood) to mystery (Harlan Coben) to family drama (Scott Turow), plus many other genres. There's even a short story by Stephen King and a poem. Most of these books won't be available for purchase until later this year.

Virtually all of the material was donated at no charge by the authors, literary agents and publishers involved. Even most of the printing cost was donated. All net proceeds go to Save the Children's relief efforts in the tsunami-striken areas.

Warning: You may be so intrigued by some of these "samples" that you may feel frustrated the full book isn't yet available. Are you listening, Dutton Publishing? I need my next Harlen Coben fix!

5.0 out of 5 stars New Beginnings: in support of Tsunami Relief ., March 10, 2006
This review is from: New Beginnings: New Writing from Bestselling Authors to Aid Save the Children (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book for several reasons. It was good to be able to support a good cause and have the opportunity to do so.I am not normally a short story person but this was different. It allowed me to read "First Chapters" from many authors,It did inspire me,I did want to read more. There is a wide variety of authors and subjects. You can pick and choose what suits you.I wanted to read more of "untitled Novel" but there did not seem to be a novel but I did follow up on some of the others. It was fun and I learnt a lot. I hope this idea continues as it is great for everyone. It helps readers, writers,
and those that suffer alike. I will recommend it to my friends and I hope others enjoy it as I have. Susan Preston
