Editorial Reviews

Michael Hurst's blood-soaked directorial debut only sounds like a vampire flick. This violent tale of a heist gone sour is indebted to Reservoir Dogs and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, but trades the jagged humor and colorful personalities of those films for an unremittingly dark ambiance of duplicity and double-crosses. The plot hinges on a rather implausible premise: grief-ridden father John Hurt agrees to pose as a wealthy kidnap victim for his estranged son (Nick Moran), a doomed punk car thief, and in return the kid will donate his heart to save his dying sister. The twist is that Hurt will not come out of this alive and he knows it--just part of the fractured dynamic of guilt and vengeance between father and son. That's actually only the first of many twists in a devious little thriller where practically everyone has an ulterior motive and a complete lack of scruples. Hurst's script, told almost entirely in a quilt of flashbacks within flashbacks, is built on a shaky foundation of dubious logic and unlikely behavior: more than contrived, it's downright unbelievable. But his execution is sound: he winds up the long night of scheming lies in a chaotic graveside shootout and a smart, satisfying, quietly redemptive conclusion. Joe Pantoliano costars as a ruthless crew leader with a wild white mane of hair, and Carrie-Anne Moss is the cool, calculating heist mastermind. --Sean Axmaker

4.0 out of 5 stars Twisted but great!, June 20, 2001

Ok, first of all I have to say this was a great movie! This movie takes you on an awesome ride full of twists and turns. In the beginning of the movie, Moran's character (a young doomed theif) arrives at his father's(played by Hurt)home after being shot, and with an offer he knows his father will not refuse. Moran's character's reason for concocting this plan, is to save his friend from death. During the entire movie your trying to figure out which story that moran's character told is true. Hurt and moran's characters seem to be caught in their own tangle of hate and distrust, that only seems to untangle when each is facing death. Close to the end of the movie I was left wandering if anyone would survive. For those who have not yet seen the movie I won't say who lives or dies, just that the ending is totally twisted. I recomend this movie to anyone who likes movies full of shoot-outs, lots of twists, double-crosses, and that don't mind movies that are somewhat dark.

3.0 out of 5 stars 3 Stars..., January 21, 2009

This review is from: New Blood (DVD)
I bought this DVD because of the very sexy Carrie-Anne Moss. I figured with her at least the movie wouldn't be a flop. I was disappointed. Carrie-Anne was in a limited number of scenes and had limited dialog. Her character was so bland and unnecessary that she wasn't even allowed to show off any of her acting tallents. The movie was purposely filmed very dark, mostly outside at night but even inside the buildings there was limited lighting. It was difficult to make out the characters because half of their face was usually in the shadows. The plot is ever changing and you can't tell what is the truth and what isn't, and it really doesn't matter. No character draws you into their plight, which leaves you wondering if you even care what happens next. The best part of the movie was the brief appearance of Eugene Robert Glasier (who played Operations on La Femme Nikita) as mobster boss Mr. Ryan. If you are a hard core fan of Carre-Ann Moss or Eugene Robert Glasier you will enjoy this movie, otherwise I suggest you not waste 90 minutes of your life on this movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best movie no one bothered to see, August 3, 2002

I work in a video store and I recommend this movie to any customer that comes in that likes action, mystery or a good 2 hours of entertainment. Of coarse none of them have ever heard of it and always hesitate to go with my recomendation for that reason but out of the hundreds that have I've never had one say they didn't like it infact most love it too. If you like movies like Memento, The Usuall suspects, and Fight Club you will love this film. It has a great cast with amazing preformances from John Hurt (Alien), Nick Moran (Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels), Carrie-Ann Moss and Joe Pantoliano (The Matrix and Memento) and a serious preformance for once from Shawn Wayans (Scary Movie). This movie is very original and will have you zoned in from begining to end. Great action, great plot, great acting, a must see.
