Book Description

May 25, 2004

New Book Design showcases the most interesting, influential, and accomplished book designs from the last ten years. It features over 100 titles published around the world, each chosen for their outstanding design qualities, from the publications of large mainstream publishers to those of small independent companies -- and even those from individual artists. Included in its pages are lavishly produced books with unconventional formats and unusual print techniques as well as less flamboyant publications produced for various different markets. A wide variety of books are featured, from paperback novels to architectural monographs, from text-based to profusely-illustrated books.

Divided into four main sections -- "Packaging," "Navigation," "Layout," and "Specification" -- the book examines each facet of book design: cover design; contents and structure; image usage; grids; typography; paper; printing; and binding. Clear photography captures each featured book, and interviews with prominent book designers, art directors, and publishers provide extra insight.

New Book Design is sure to provide a rich source of inspiration to book designers and bibliophiles alike.

4.0 out of 5 stars The rare catalog that's more than the sum of its parts, March 26, 2005
By
Forrest L. Norvell (San Francisco, CA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: New Book Design (Paperback)
This book doesn't pretend to be anything other than a catalog of interestingly designed books from the last 10-15 years, but much of the work it catalogs is beautiful, from Irma Boom's "big book" to Derek Birdsall's new edition of the Anglican Book of Common Prayer. As usual, many of the most elegant and refined examples portrayed are themselves either books on graphic design or typography, or are themselves design catalogs. However, for designers looking for unusual ideas on binding, and for those interested postmodern examples of grid-based design, this is sure to be thought-provoking.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile Overview of Contemporary Book Design, October 30, 2007

This book presents an extensive and worthwhile overview of important contemporary book designs. Definitely worth picking up and looking at if only to get an idea as to what art and design books are held in high regard.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ghastly, January 25, 2006
This review is from: New Book Design (Paperback)
If you have any interest in and concern for the written word in extended texts then this book is not for you: 95% of these designers seem to actively loathe it. It already looks out of date; grossly impoverished intellectually, this arty rubbish is of a piece with the poverty of contemporary trade book production.
