A great collection of viepoints
Although this is not the single best book on documentary film, it is arguably the best collection of essays gathered on the subject. A wide range of viewpoints are represented, and the organization is logical and easily understood. Rosenthal comes at his subject from the point of view of a hack, and it shows. Depressing

Although this is not the single best book on documentary film, it is arguably the best collection of essays gathered on the subject. A wide range of viewpoints are represented, and the organization is logical and easily understood. This was a text in a documentary production course I took as a graduate student, and now that I will be teaching such a course, I plan to use it as well.

The articles Rosenthal collected are the best in the field. The documentary needs more theoretical input like this to give the new film makers a better understanding of the art of documentary film making.
