Book Description

August 2001
How China rises to become a powerful global economic force in the context of its entry into the World Trade Organization.

The aim of New China Rising is to help the readers to visualize the political, social, economic and business landscapes of China in five to ten years' time. The writer attempts to postulate on the development of China in the face of various "market opening measures." The book covers the major development and policy initiatives of the Chinese government in explaining the current social, political and economic environments, from which scenarios are built about the future developments based on a close understanding of the Chinese policy makers' options and inclinations. Based on current and historical facts, attempts are made to postulate the fate of different industries, the state-owned enterprise reform and the private sector. It then goes on to identify some of the pitfalls of China investing and how to deal with the various tricky business practice issues, after the WTO entry.

It also touches on the impact of China's WTO entry on the economies of Hong Kong, Taiwan and the rest of Southeast Asia.

Subsequently, the discussion moves on to the chart development paths of the financial system and capital markets of China in the face of giant-size foreign competitors. It goes on to explore the Renminbi convertibility issue and its impact on the Hong Kong dollar and economy. From the deductions made about the development of the capital market and currency regime, the writer goes on to postulate the rise and fall of the fortune of the key cities (Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hong Kong) post WTO entry. Taiwan is also brought into the discussion with respect to its unwilling economic integration with the Chinese economy and its being the irritant in the Sino-U.S. trade relationship even after China's WTO entry.

Finally, New China Rising goes on to explore the longer-term issues such as legal system, tax system, social welfare and corruption in relation to the globalization trend under the WTO framework.
