More About the Author

People accuse me of being a 21st century OH SUSANNA. I am not from Alabama, but I wander the globe with a laptop on my knee.

I am American, but I live in France. I have been been a college professor, a fashion model, a journalist, an interpreter, a novelist, a fireworks salesperson, director of a Parisian Couture boutique, an elevator operator, a shoe salesperson, a single mother and a simultaneous translator. Best thing I ever did was write books.

I have mostly lived in Paris my whole adult life. I have two grown children who were born in Paris. One lives in Los Angeles. One lives in Paris.

By 1970, I had tired of teaching, modeling and translating. So I began writing articles for women's magazines. My first article appeared in Cosmopolitan in 1971. Then, in 1973, I wrote a novel called Ladyfingers. It was published by a big New York publisher. I was proud and pleased to actually be able to earn a living being "a writer". I wanted to go on writing stories, but my literary agent decided I should write non fiction. I balked at first. But when I did she said, "Novels are risky. They might sell. They might not. If you only write novels, your children will starve."

She gave me a choice between Cooking and Astrology. I chose the latter, providing I could write about Chinese Astrology - the animal signs. By 1975 I had published my first book about Chinese Astrology. By now, I have written four best-selling books about Chinese and western Astrology. My readers have dubbed me "The High Priestess". That is flattering. I love email and I adore being on Facebook and Twitter where I can actually talk to readers one on one. ...or at least I think so. And some people say I'm awful smart.
The book divides us humans into twelve categories. Each
category corresponds to an animal. Then we are all divided into five more categories. These are wood, fire, earth, metal, and
water. So all of humanity is divided into sixty categories.
If I can be serious for a moment, which isn't easy sometimes,
this is a very good book for business and human relationships.
It is not the definitive book on business and human relationships. It has to be used properly. In a fashion to understand others and situations. Not to judge,
moralize, or condemn. I do think that Suzanne White is the
best astrologer alive. I think that I have explored all the popular writers in the last thirty years. The very best book
on the subject, I still believe, is Suzanne White's "The New Astrology." That book and this book make a good team if used with discretion. In this book, we are entirely exposed to the
subject of "Chinese" Astrology. She gives a description
of the twelve animals. This is further divided into the sixty
when we add the elements. She gives a future outlook for
all animals up to the year 2008. The book is large. Over 500
pages. This is mainly because of the range. By this, I mean that one can use this text for fun or for very serious matters.
The range of this book is what I think seperates it from other
Chinese astrology books that I have seen. Some are "cute."
Some take themselves deadly serious. This book is versatile.
It's also a bit hard-hitting. The author doesn't believe in pulling punches in regards to her descriptions of personality types. Nor is she careful in sparing our feelings in regards
to our relationships. She descibes one relationship of mine as
a "catastrophe." It is this clarity and the versatility which
make this and "The New Astrology" good fine texts for business
and professional people who simply don't want to get into "all that." Namely, astrology. For those who believe that astrology
does indeed hold something that is valuable and useful, but
who don't want to examine why, I can think of no other author who can help us. Help us to get into the "real stuff" of the
subject while not getting our hands dirty with "the stars."
Buy this book and "The New Astrology." Don't tell anybody that you do put any value on astrology. And consult them when you feel that
some insight is necessary. Thank you and keep clean and do right.

This book is fine if you're only looking for fun, fluffy info. If you are a dedicated follower of Chinese astrology, you'd be better off not taking this book too seriously (or maybe not reading it at all). There are countless errors in interpretation, and the author would do well to concentrate on more research the next time around, and less on trite generalizations based on her personal experiences. Other books I would recommend from Amazon instead of this one: any of the Theodora Lau books, and definitely the Taoist Astrology ones.

Those who are cranky about the lack of technical astrology in White's books should keep in mind that a reading is only as good as the interpreter! White obviously knows people and personalities, and her opinion is what I paid the money for. If you want a manual, for heaven's sake, by a darned manual.

But if you want a ready and accurate reference to your personal astrological tendencies or someone else's, this is a very worthwhile and absorbing volume. I have her "New Astrology" book and like it, but this book gives more detailed descriptions, and her intuition is uncanny. If you want to be clued in to what you've been up to all your life, buy this book. She described me, my husband and our marriage gratifyingly, and I re-read it time to time for a refresher. Suzanne is a unique and fabulous talent.
