5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book on Astrology Ever Written in Human History!, November 9, 2001
...or at least I think so. And some people say I'm awful smart.
The book divides us humans into twelve categories. Each
category corresponds to an animal. Then we are all divided into five more categories. These are wood, fire, earth, metal, and
water. So all of humanity is divided into sixty categories.
If I can be serious for a moment, which isn't easy sometimes,
this is a very good book for business and human relationships.
It is not the definitive book on business and human relationships. It has to be used properly. In a fashion to understand others and situations. Not to judge,
moralize, or condemn. I do think that Suzanne White is the
best astrologer alive. I think that I have explored all the popular writers in the last thirty years. The very best book
on the subject, I still believe, is Suzanne White's "The New Astrology." That book and this book make a good team if used with discretion. In this book, we are entirely exposed to the
subject of "Chinese" Astrology. She gives a description
of the twelve animals. This is further divided into the sixty
when we add the elements. She gives a future outlook for
all animals up to the year 2008. The book is large. Over 500
pages. This is mainly because of the range. By this, I mean that one can use this text for fun or for very serious matters.
The range of this book is what I think seperates it from other
Chinese astrology books that I have seen. Some are "cute."
Some take themselves deadly serious. This book is versatile.
It's also a bit hard-hitting. The author doesn't believe in pulling punches in regards to her descriptions of personality types. Nor is she careful in sparing our feelings in regards
to our relationships. She descibes one relationship of mine as
a "catastrophe." It is this clarity and the versatility which
make this and "The New Astrology" good fine texts for business
and professional people who simply don't want to get into "all that." Namely, astrology. For those who believe that astrology
does indeed hold something that is valuable and useful, but
who don't want to examine why, I can think of no other author who can help us. Help us to get into the "real stuff" of the
subject while not getting our hands dirty with "the stars."
Buy this book and "The New Astrology." Don't tell anybody that you do put any value on astrology. And consult them when you feel that
some insight is necessary. Thank you and keep clean and do right.

If you are a dedicated follower of Chinese astrology, you'd be better off not taking this book too seriously (or maybe not reading it at all). There are countless errors in interpretation, and the author would do well to concentrate on more research the next time around, and less on trite generalizations based on her personal experiences. Other books I would recommend from Amazon instead of this one: any of the Theodora Lau books, and definitely the Taoist Astrology ones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth more than money, January 3, 2000
By
Those who are cranky about the lack of technical astrology in White's books should keep in mind that a reading is only as good as the interpreter! White obviously knows people and personalities, and her opinion is what I paid the money for. If you want a manual, for heaven's sake, by a darned manual.

But if you want a ready and accurate reference to your personal astrological tendencies or someone else's, this is a very worthwhile and absorbing volume. I have her "New Astrology" book and like it, but this book gives more detailed descriptions, and her intuition is uncanny. If you want to be clued in to what you've been up to all your life, buy this book. She described me, my husband and our marriage gratifyingly, and I re-read it time to time for a refresher. Suzanne is a unique and fabulous talent.

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but somewhat lacking., November 30, 2009
I purchased this book to take the place of a much loved, dog-eared edition I bought years ago. I thought that this newer, revised and updated version would have a lot more to offer.

Well, it does have more pages, but it hasn't evolved much.

While the over-all descriptions of each sign might be enlightening to someone new to Chinese (lunar) astrology, it is in the specifics for each sign that things break down. The book does divide each sign into the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal and water), but it does not take into account the Western signs. For example, a Virgo pig differs from a Scorpio pig. A Pisces horse differs from a Sagittarius horse. These differences are not noted in the book.

So the result is that you end up with a one-size-fits all generalization of each Chinese astrological sign. This is far from accurate for everyone.

If you are looking for entertainment, or for a general overview of Chinese astrology, this book is a good start. But, despite the size of the book, much of the information is very general and superficial. After reading this book, I'd suggest that you also purchase a book that combines both Western and Chinese astrology. It will give you a broader picture.

5.0 out of 5 stars The New Chinese Astrology, November 4, 2006
By
This book was terrific as I have read other books on Chinese Astrology in the past, have some even, and the way Suzanne White broke down even the signs, gives more meaning to the signs. At times in the past when meeting someone who is for example a Dog Chinese Astrology sign, they may not seem like someone else I know with the same sign, now I know why! This book is a terrific reference book to have on hand for anyone who reads up on Chinese Astrology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ms. White's unique viewpoint is extremely helpful, July 5, 1998
By A Customer
Wish to respond to reviewer from Minnesota who criticizes Ms. White's writing - I haven't read current text, but have read Ms. White's original "Book of Chinese Chance" - in fact I keep going back to it almost every week and reread passages of it as I meet people who manifest certain idosyncrasies that appear puzzling to me - she is extremely accurate in assessing personality characteristics of Chinese years with zodiac sign - and found her personal anecdotal style very appropriate to seeing how personality traits of given combination manifest themselves in real life situations - by the way, so much so, that frequently it's almost uncanny and has made me be open to the possibility that the Chinese have known a lot more about human nature than most Western philosophers and for a lot longer -- also, her approach, which is to make such concepts relevant to a wide audience, makes one a believer (if not already) in a greater order and design to the universe then comes from the mind of man, alone.

From - A skeptical attorney Virgo/Pig, married to a Chinese Leo/Ox who also has learned to understand her Virgo/rat daughter (as well as her husband) a great deal better after studying Ms. White's book. Test it yourself, for example, if you've ever known someone at work who would step on their own mother's back to get promoted, etc. (or the mother who asks "Did you hurt yourself sonny, when he trips?"), check their birthdate out with White's Chinese/zodiac sign. You might learn something and have some fun along the way! Glad to see that Ms. White is still writing - I haven't looked for anything else she's written since being given the Book of Chinese Chance by a cousin of mine who had highlighted all the things in Ms. White's "Pig" description he thought was talking about me.

I DEEPLY APPRECIATED THIS BOOK. I WAS VERY AMAZED AT THE ACCURACY WITH WHICH MS.WHITE ASSOCIATES HUMAN CHARACTERISTICS WITH EACH OF THE ANIMAL SIGNS IN THE CHINESE ZODIAC. SHE EXPLAINS THE INNER DEPTHS OF THE HUMAN CHARACTERISTIC WITH ACCURACY AND PRECISION. THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT MS.WHITE IS A TRUE STUDENT OF ANCIENT ASTROLOGY. 5.0 out of 5 stars A must own for any up-and-coming astrologer!, April 11, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
A combination of the chinese animal zodiac a long with it's corresponding element for the year, this book is a complete aspect of the chinese zodiac. Including chart that shows the animal/element for each year from 2020 all the way back to the early 1500's. Add Suzanne's "The New Astrology" to this one and gain a complete picture of the western zodiac and the corresponding eastern zodiac and its element for that year, making the most out of anybodies birthdate. Apropriate for people who want to get the complete aspect out of their charts. Suzanne White has made excellent contributions to the world of astrology, her books are easy to read and full of well-researched information. For anybody trying to make sense of astrology to the more experienced astrologer, Suzanne White's entire collection is a must own!

1.0 out of 5 stars "Tip of the Iceburg" Astrology, February 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The New Chinese Astrology (Hardcover)
Unfortunatly, for many of us who are searching for insights into Chinese Astrology, this book offers very little understanding about Chinese Astrology in its true form. The subjective material in White's books only foster more confusion and further divide readers from the true application of Chinese Astrology. This book can contribute to 5% of an individual's astrological profile at the most. Suzanne White's books in general are poor attempts of self-discovery through the art of Astrology.

5.0 out of 5 stars CHINESE ASTROLOGY AS IT APPLIES TO REAL PEOPLE, September 14, 2002
This book is one of Suzanne White's absolutely best efforts at making us aware of who we are and how we behave thanks to our Chinese signs. It's full of anecdotes about real people who are Monkeys or Horses or Pigs and who actually act like their signs.
There's no mumbo jumbo astro talk here. The New Chinese Astrology is chockablock with informantion - and it's fun to read. This book is a permanent part of my self-help library. Get it today. You won't be sorry you did.
