Wendell Berry. Need I say more ? He is actually one of my major all-time faves, along with Basho, Tagore, and Gary Snyder. Berry is such a "man of the earth" that I really appreciate his thoughts and the way he writes 'em down.

Others have reviewed this beautifully, and I don't reviews books or movies well so I won't attempt to now. Suffice it to say I'm a huge prose reader - poetry not so much. I heard Wendell read some of his poems on Bill Moyers and was so moved I had to look him up. Such a command of the language he has, but readable and unambiguous. Some of them move me to tears, not because of sadness in the writing but because of the profound love and compassion he has for all living things and the natural world. I wish I knew him but will have to be satisfied with his writings. I defy anyone to read this book without feeling somehow expanded.

Wendell Berry is one of the more under-rated poets of the last 50 years. His new collection of his best over that time demonstrates time and again his deep connection with the land, his profound but complex religious faith, and his lyrical ear. His poems can be read and appreciated by those who regularly read verse and those who seldom do.

That accessibility and his impatience with artifice in poetry or politics may suggest why some in the academic world ignore or disparage his writing.

The later collections are not as strong as those from 1994 and before. His elegies, especially the one for his grandfather, are haunting and universal. I highly recommend living with this collection for a while.

What's not to like about this old farmer/poet/ Bill Moyers interviewed him with some sharing of poems read by the author. Populist, patriot, and progressive, Berry is a real treasure and a hero to those of us that know America can be a better place without the far right wing nuts!

This is one of those books of poetry which, as a poet, leave me in awe and anger. Awe of his incredible felicity and inventiveness with language, anger that I didn't write these poems myself. As C.K. Williams wrote in a recent poem, poets are wasting their time if they're not reading poems which leave them "whacked." So okay. I feel sufficiently whacked.

Berry's ability to play both pure imagist and brilliant symbolist is astounding. He's often called a "nature poet," and while many of these poems are indeed OF nature, they are still about things that us city and suburb dwellers live everyday: fear of death, plans which never get fulfilled, time which is always too short, spouses whom we hold close in sleep.

This is simply delightful. Read on...

Those of us that are Wendel Berry enthusiast look forward to new releases. Wendel believes in place, values, people. These poems recall so many things that are gone, so many things that are so ordinary we take them for granted. I read one of his poems every day in my devotions. Take your time on this one.
