5.0 out of 5 stars How color affects space and existing conditions!
I love how this book shows how different colors can change a layout without having to change major items (i.e. your furniture). They say paint is the cheapest way to change a room and this book shows how. It definantely pays for itself, trust me. I had a darker colored room and flipped through this book and saw all the possibilities for making it a warmer more spacious...

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring
I really expected more versatility out of this book with the title. I suggest reviewing it in person before purchase, to see if this is what you're looking for. The color combinations I found to be very muted.

They say paint is the cheapest way to change a room and this book shows how. It definantely pays for itself, trust me. I had a darker colored room and flipped through this book and saw all the possibilities for making it a warmer more spacious place. I chose an orange-peach color (close to one of the colors I saw in the book) and I got a whole new room! It feels much more like home. I'm so glad I found this book, otherwise I may have never been bold enough to paint it that color. Excellent buy, well worth the price, it's a steal!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting to flip through, but not very useful, March 8, 2007

This is a fun book. Kind of like the flip books where you make funny cartoon characters. But this is colors for walls, ceilings, and floors.
It's neat to see how different a room (same furniture) looks with pink walls and yellow ceiling as opposed to blue walls, green ceiling.

But while it's kind of neat to play with, I don't see how it is very useful. There are sections for living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens. Each section has two different rooms - one more country-style decorated, the other a little more modern.

The furniture pieces in the living rooms and bedrooms are very neutral. Both bedrooms and both living rooms however feature light colored furniture, I would have prefered one option to show darker woods since that is mainly what I have in my house.

The floor color choices are not that great either. Not enough neutrals for the floor choices, since most people would be working with what they already have on the floor, and using this mainly to choose a wall color.

One of the bathrooms features a grayish-green counter and tilework. One kitchen has white cabinets, one kitchen has yellow cabinets. Those colors really affect how you see the other colors in the room. Great if you have that color already in your house and are trying to work around it, but not so great if you are trying to actually choose colors for your house.

So if you can get a used copy for not much, it is fun to look through. Not worth full price, unless you have a houseful of very light colored furniture or are completely starting from scratch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, it was too helpful!!, February 1, 2010
I'm sorry so many others here had little use for this book--I love it! We used it to paint our living room and dining room and I lent it to my brother who used it as well. It's the variety of combinations that is thrilling to see. It's hard for me to go to a paint store, look at a huge array of color cards and envision my rooms. The blue with the yellow tinge, red tinge? Dark or lighter? Will this look good with my woodwork and furniture? This book helps a lot with being able to visualize your own home with a variety of combinations.

The best thing about this book is that it shakes up your narrow views--at least mine were narrow--about color, tone and hue combinations. Someone here said who would paint a ceiling anything other than white? We did!! A pleasant light rose. Along with the soft blue of the LR and equal tone of fern green in the DR, somehow the non-white ceiling complements the natural and artificial lighting and general "feel" of the 2 rooms. We moved into a home where the owners had just installed blood red wall-to-wall carpeting. Really hard to determine what would go with that. By playing around with the flooring colors, we could light on one of many good combinations. Of course the furniture featured in the book is neutral and probably won't be like yours. So one of the LR combinations might not inspire. But look at some of the mixes for the kitchen and bath. It's looking back and forth to see how the colors themselves blend. Who knew that you could paint the ceiling a pale green and have light grayish floor with rich maroon walls...and it works? You can't look at paint chips and picture how they'll look in your home.

Each room has many pages of suggested complementary colors. If you don't want to change the color of your floor, find the page that matches it. There will be a suggested wall and ceiling scheme for that floor. But play with the many different wall pages to get a sense of the effect many different colors will have on the floor and vice versa. Maybe you'll be attracted to contrasting colors instead of complementary ones. If you want decorating books with more conventional color combos, there is a huge variety. But this book lets you tailor colors for your own home and encourages your creativity. Be unique!! Step outside the box!!

My mother is one whose biggest decisions are whether to go with the eggshell white or the winter white because white makes the room look bigger. Wrong!! White often makes a room look colder and is jarring to the eyes, making it less comfortable. Go for cozy. Go for bold. Go for highlights. My favorite decorating book--paint rocks!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Wha I Expected, September 18, 2005
This review is from: The New Color Book: 45,000 Color Combinations for Your Home (Spiral-bound)
This book may be good for looking at changing your paint color, but was not helpful in picking out a new color pallet for a newly constructed home.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money, November 29, 2008
By
I wish I had read the comments before I bought this! I just assumed it would be color combos for decorating (like couches, pillows, curtains, accessories, etc.). Instead, you get ceiling color (who paints the ceiling something other than white?), wall color and floor color (in the bathroom, the only material options are wood and rubber -- where's the tile?). I was totally disappointed. I don't want a book of wall colors that have been changed via computer! If I wanted that, I'd just go to Home Depot or Lowe's and get the little cards that the paint manufacturers produce.

Bleech! Don't buy this book. It's a waste of money. I'm sorry I bought it. I'll probably never even reference it again.

1.0 out of 5 stars not as useful as expected, October 30, 2008

I purchased this book with the hope it would give me some ideas on how to paint my condo. Unfortunately, I spent more time fussing with the pages so they would line up instead of getting ideas. I think the concept is good, but the execution could be done better. Overall, I would look elsewhere for ideas on painting your interiors.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pretty cover, but totally useless, July 9, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I ordered this thinking it would be a great reference book for quick color palettes. I am a paint color specialist and I think it is the worst book I have ever encountered published on color for your home. There are far too many choices for homeowners in here and the photo's to help you work with your floor and wall colors are less than inspiring. I would purchase Choosing Colors, by Kevin McCloud -- by far the best color reference book I have ever used.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as helpful as I would have liked, January 2, 2008

As I stated in the title, this book was not as helpful (to me) as I would have liked.

The format of this book is as a "flip book".What this means is that each chapter has a specific color scheme and then you can flip the top or the bottom part of each page until you find a color combination that you prefer.

The negative part of this book is that the author shows very few "settings" by which a person can flip through. Therefore, in each chapter the same couch and wood trim are shown over and over again and the only thing that changes is the top or the bottom of each page. At first I found this was a bit interesting, but after just a few page flips I realized that I needed more settings in order to visualize each color combination. Thus, the pages are just too stagnant.

I paid full price for this book and I kick myself for doing that. I wish I had either personally reviewed this book first , or paid a lot less for it. So I suppose that if you can find this book for a cheap price, then it may be interesting to own. However, I think there are so many other more valuable books out there on the subject of "decorating & choosing interior home colors",that I would explore those first.
