Summary

In today's media environment all communication experts need to become well acquainted with the new and future technologies that impact our society. This book showcases the the new technologies and how they work as well as their importance in the media world today.

The book starts off by shining light on communication today. Since we are living in the communication revolution new and existing technologies are influencing the communication industry and society for example the latest generation of PC's which can produce multimedia presentations. Optical disk is covered, which offered increased storage capabilities.

Digital communication systems are explored as flexible communication channels that can carry information ranging from computer data to digitized voice and video.

DSL and Cable Modems have become a phenom which allow the user to receive data at the speeds up to 50 times faster than a 28.8kbps modem. As digital equipment is massed produced manufacturing cost are reduced and become increasingly cost efficient to build and maintain.

The PC has made it possible for us to complete jobs ranging form processing letters to creating spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations.

The microcomputer which is also called today laptops and notebook computers are very convenient for student on the go as well as professional men and woman.

With this new technology it makes it easier to take daily work with you where ever you may be. It also doesn't hurt that prices are falling because of its sophistication.

Alexander Graham Bell the inventor of the telephone used light to transmit sound. it wasn't until the twentieth century that it was used as a tool which was transformed in to a practical communication system. Two developments made way for this advancement such as the perfection of the laser and the manufacturing of hair thin glass lines called fiber optic lines. when combined they help create a light wave communication systems which beams of light are used to carry or transmit information.

A goal of the communication industry is to provide viewers with more control over programming choices for example pay per view. You are able view new movie release just by a push of the button. It makes it more convenient for consumers to watch movie form their own home instead of waiting in line to rent a movie at Blockbuster.

Satellite communication has also become a part of everyday life. we can make international phone calls as easily as local calls down the street. The capability to exchange information is made possible by satellite. Plans for the next generation of communication satellite have been drafted. The space craft will improve on current designs and carry on-board switching and processing equipment.

Optical disk have emerged as an important information storage tool in the 1980's. Today optical storage include video disk, CD's, CD-Rs, CDIs, DVDs and CD Roms.

High Definition Television also known as HDTV was introduced as the new television standard. its display would visually approach the quality of film, and the system would support an enhanced audio signal. color tv is not the is not for the jones's anymore.

Digital Audio Broadcasting was pioneered in Canada and Europe, digital audio broadcasting can deliver a CD quality relay by satellite. This service could be extended to car owners through a small roof mounted dish

I loved this book because it had valuable information for comm tech students. I highly recommend this book as it would be a good value to any journalist or communication major because it can serve as a learning and research tool in their future.

this book is a text book. As text books go it is fine. What I am impressed by is the fact that Amazon had it and at such a reasonable price. Had I purchased it second hand from the school it would have been at least bucks! Also the delivery was timely. Thanks, Bren

I found the book well written and informative. Even if I didn't need the book for New Comm Tech at Marywood University, I would have eventually bought the book. This book is a must for anyone with an interest in the many fields within Communication, as it has a wide breadth and covers many Comm disciplines.
