5.0 out of 5 stars More stuff, less fluff
This is, far and away, the best "Hoyle" book of games I have---and I have quite a few. Rather than fill empty space with irrelevant pictures or wasted space, this two-inch plus thick tome gives you the information you need to play the game in an easy to follow and easy to read format. If I'm reading another "Hoyle" book and find an ambiguity, I ultimately pull this book...

is the common philosophy
all characters whoever i choose as partner play the same
on getting the pack this occurs if cards can possibly go to finish the round
''can i go out partner''

5.0 out of 5 stars More stuff, less fluff, July 20, 2008

This is, far and away, the best "Hoyle" book of games I have---and I have quite a few. Rather than fill empty space with irrelevant pictures or wasted space, this two-inch plus thick tome gives you the information you need to play the game in an easy to follow and easy to read format. If I'm reading another "Hoyle" book and find an ambiguity, I ultimately pull this book out to resolve the issue. It's also filled with interesting historical information on the various games, and conveniently lumps the various games together by family: Poker; Rummy (including Gin Rummy and Canasta); Whist (including Bridge); Euchre (including Five Hundred); Hearts; Stops (including Crazy Eights); All Fours (a.k.a. High-Low-Jack); Bezique (including Pinochle); and Miscellaneous (including Skat, Cribbage, and Piquet). There are then separate sections of Patience (Solitaire) games, children's card games, social gambling games, dice games, casino gambling games, tile games (including dominoes and Mah Jong), board games (such as chess, backgammon, and checkers), and parlor games. A must-have for the family that prefers each other's company over the cold blue glow of a flickering television set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Tome for Card and Board Games, October 12, 2002
This review is from: The New Complete Hoyle: The Authoritative Guide to the Official Rules of All Popular Games of Skill and Chance, Revised Edition (Hardcover)
More lurid books have I read,
but that goes better unsaid.
But still, just the same,
these rules of the game
is complete from alpha to zed.

Stop arguments with your family. Checkers really does have rules. Learn if you must jump the other guy, if you must move the piece you touch, and precisely when a red queen can be placed on a black king.

No one who plays games should be without "The New Complete Hoyle Revised." It was great 300 years ago (so I'm told) and is great now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference for Rules, September 25, 2011
This review is from: The New Complete Hoyle: The Authoritative Guide to the Official Rules of All Popular Games of Skill and Chance, Revised Edition (Hardcover)
When I was growing up my brother and I used a dog-eared, cover-missing paperback copy of Hoyle's in order to learn new card games such as Canasta, which we loved. And of course we used it to check the rules of anything in dispute. For years I thought that Hoyle's was a book that didn't get revised. But several years ago I saw and bought this book. I enjoy having a sturdy, hardback copy, and the rules are as clearly explained as ever, with new games in addition. I find it amusing to think that when I was growing up I knew how to play dominoes, but I haven't played it in a long time, so I actually needed this book to re-learn how to play as simple a game as dominoes!

I ordered the book of Hoyle for my grandson. We would play cards, but we had differences on what the correct rules were. This book ended our challenge. We both know the rules now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book of Games! Easy to learn instructions!, June 30, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The New Complete Hoyle (Hardcover)
This book gives you all the things you need to know about card, board, and dice games such as craps, baggamon, and poker! These are some of the many great games you can learn about in The New Complete Hoyle Revised! Learn all about other games such as gin, chess, casino games, bridge, and all of our other treasured games of chance that we love! Take the games that you thought you hated and give 'em a go! Hoyle makes learning card, dice, and board games fun! There are adult chance and betting games to children's games that bring back memories of your days of charades and fun! Have a blast reading the book, and a better time gathering the guys and playing a round of poker or two. Or three. Or perhaps even five! For the kids, on long car trips, you may say "are we there yet?" Bring a deck of cards, a maximum of ten dice, and your Hoyle book, look up a dice game such as lair dice or a card game like solitare and your parents will be shocked to hear you say "were there already?" For the boring, rainy days, pull out a deck of cards, look up in your Hoyle book a game that you thought you would never learn to play, and learn! The day will whiz by while you take turns with your brother playing war! Ask your sister to roll the die and see about a seven at craps! See? Completely revised, updated, and expanded! It even says so on the cover! The authoritative guide to the official game rules of popular games of skill and chance!
