Book Description

Resources for Biblical Study September 30, 2006
New Currents through John brings into focus the dramatic changes in method that have taken place in Johannine studies in the past fifty years. Written in light of John A. T. Robinson's analysis of the New Look in the Johannine scholarship of fifty years ago, each essay in this volume engages a current issue in contemporary research. Contributions from a diversity of voices and perspectives reflect the increasing globalization of theological dialogue. Highlighting the work of emerging scholars against the backdrop of traditional perspectives, this volume also forecasts trends in Johannine scholarship for the next several decades. The contributors are Armand Barus, Jaime Clark-Soles, Carsten Claussen, Mary L. Coloe, R. Alan Culpepper, Brian D. Johnson, Matthew Kraus, Francisco Lozada Jr., Beth M. Sheppard, Yak-hwee Tan, and Tom Thatcher.

Editorial Reviews

Review

As one might expect from SBL, this publication is excellently written, researched and referenced. The work of the editors has ensured homogeneity throughout the book in both style and methodology, without impinging upon the individuality of the various contributors. In a work specifically intended to offer a plurality of voices that evince the breadth and depth possible within studies on the Fourth Gospel, this is highly beneficial. With the exception of the final pages of Claussen s essay and an isolated footnote, virtually no account is taken of the existence of the Johannine epistles. For a work on the Fourth Gospel this may well be deemed necessary, but for a work that offers new pathways for Johannine studies this might be viewed as an oversight. Nevertheless, this publication really is a 'must read' for anyone involved in serious Johannine studies. It offers an authentic connection with past and present established scholarship on John s Gospel. At the same time it opens the window wide open for looking at new, viable Johannine horizons - particularly in light of the by now well-recognized diversity within new global trends and perspectives. --Glenn Balfour, Journal for the Study of the New Testament (30/5 [2008]: 73)
