5.0 out of 5 stars A design book I'll actually use!
I saw the author in a short TV segment and sprung for the book. I highly recommend it! I'm not a particularly craftsy person, but the book's organization gives you confidence. It's laid out starting with very simple projects and progresses logically to more complex ones as you build your skill level. The photos are clear and helpful. The text directions are easy to...

3.0 out of 5 stars Some good, some bad.
Love the overall visuals from Durwin Rice's book but after reading it I am surprised he has failed to mention some important things. If someone cuts an image out of a magazine or book and doesn't want to color copy it, he doesn't tell you that BOTH SIDES of the paper should be sealed before decoupaging it (like with Mod Podge), otherwise, any printed words or images from...

5.0 out of 5 stars A design book I'll actually use!, January 12, 2000
I saw the author in a short TV segment and sprung for the book. I highly recommend it! I'm not a particularly craftsy person, but the book's organization gives you confidence. It's laid out starting with very simple projects and progresses logically to more complex ones as you build your skill level. The photos are clear and helpful. The text directions are easy to follow and even humorous! I actually finished the beginner project and it came out great - it's now hanging in my kitchen! I've got a few more projects to go before I start on that table, but I've started to collect the images I want to use & am already starting to lay out the design.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cuts to the chase!, May 29, 2004
I purchased Leslie Linsley's Decoupage, Design, Create, Display and Durwin Rice's New Decoupage at the same time and received Leslie's book first. I was somewhat put off by her style. . .too foo foo for me. Her book was more like an art book showcasing her travels to other countries. Yawn.

Durwin's book gets to the point and says it like it is. All of his techniques work! The suggestion to "relax" the image before applying is awesome!

His humorous approach will have you in stitches. If you want a no-nonsense step-by-step approach to decoupage without the fluff then buy this book first!

5.0 out of 5 stars Style, Daring and a Touch of Humour, October 5, 2000

Durwin Rice is that very rare bird - an artist with a sense of humour. In his book,"New Decoupage" Rice inspires both enthusiasts and newcomers to the art to throw off conventional thinking and make for themselves a future antique. He avoids anything twee and brings a fresh eye to his passionate love affair with paper and scissors. Through his very user-friendly web site Rice gives personal guidance to anyone needing advice. Many of the glass plates used in the book can be bought by mail from this excellent support site. I found this book refreshing, funny, inspiring and a great bedtime read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great "How To", September 6, 2003
By

I'm a beginner at this but I found this book to have really great instruction on how to do decoupage well plus all sorts of info on the tools of the trade such as scissors and glues and where to find images. It really had everything I needed to get started and actually make some pretty neat things (I decorated a gloass plate for my aunt and she was quite impressed) Lots of incredible sample works which were way over my head......someday I suppose I'll be able to do some like that! Pictures throughout are great & instructions are clear.

I've already tried two of the projects in Durwin's book. They both turned out great! Can't wait to try more. Easy to read. Great pictures to follow.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book CHANGED MY LIFE!!! ..for the BETTER!!!, February 7, 2008
This review is from: New Decoupage: Transforming Your Home with Paper, Glue, and Scissors (Paperback)
Years ago I discovered this book in its original hardback version. New Decoupage was a breath of fresh air to the entire world of decoupage !..This was the first ever book where I have experienced making the art of decoupage a FUN journey!! Mr Rice also has a creative eye that feeds the soul, opens creative eyes to a world of possibilities while generously sharing his genius with wit and making the entire experience comfortable.
This book made me want to try new things and have FUN while learning. . I can now testify that I am a successful decoupage artist and my work is making people HAPPY!! I had never ever known that all of this creativity was locked inside of me until NEW DECOUPAGE manifested itself in my life!! ...I even loaned out my last copy and somehow it was not returned. It was such a thrill to see that we can get this TREASURE now in a paperback version....a portable version. Even though Mr Rice on his website had expressed that it was the same text as the original.....when I received my new Paperback version ....I spent hours just absorbing how wonderful this book was!! New things will be discovered on EVERY journey into New Decoupage and I cannot even begin to express how grateful I am that an entire new audience will now be exposed to this Book of Wonder!!

This book is fabulous and long overdue. The original is not available and this is a beautiful useable new paperback edition from the best in the business and master teacher of the craft. I am buying additional copies as gifts!

3.0 out of 5 stars Some good, some bad., February 25, 2010
This review is from: New Decoupage: Transforming Your Home with Paper, Glue, and Scissors (Paperback)
Love the overall visuals from Durwin Rice's book but after reading it I am surprised he has failed to mention some important things. If someone cuts an image out of a magazine or book and doesn't want to color copy it, he doesn't tell you that BOTH SIDES of the paper should be sealed before decoupaging it (like with Mod Podge), otherwise, any printed words or images from the other side can "shadow" through to the front. This is SO important and is such a basic decoupage concept, I was surprised it wasn't mentioned. Also, I have been decoupaging for a million years and it is crazy to use so much glue! There is absolutely no reason to smother your work in glue, only having to turn around and wipe it all off. Maybe he has stock in Elmer's Glue, JUST KIDDING! Also, the idea of decoupaging the inside of my fridge is gross. It's nice to be creative, but honestly, this is going a bit too far. Now, the outside of the fridge could be interesting...
