5.0 out of 5 stars New Dimensions in Photo Processes, December 27, 2007
This review is from: New Dimensions in Photo Processes, Fourth Edition: A Step by Step Manual for Alternative Techniques (Paperback)
Laura Blacklow's New Dimensions in Photo Processes (4th Ed.) is an excellent step by step manual to a great number of alternative photographic techniques. It covers not only the basic commonly used techniques (solvent transfers, Polaroid transfers, cyanotype) but many lesser used processes (bromoil printing, contemporary daguerreotypes, etc.) I own a number of other artist written technique books and have not found one that is more comprehensive, organized or easy to follow. The book is well illustrated not only with engaging examples of artwork but also with excellent step-by-step photographic illustrations of the various processes. If a technique requires work with a computer (e.g. making a digital negative), Blacklow has included images of the computer screens involved and walks the student through the processes with step by step instructions. With techniques using hands on chemistry, safety issues are appropriately considered and addressed. It is clear that Blacklow has considerable knowledge of both the chemistry and computer skills involved. I am an artist who has worked considerably with non-photographic printmaking techniques and have minimal experience with the processes covered in this book, but feel confident that I could follow this book's directions and successfully learn any of them. Bravo--five stars and more. . .

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the seasoned professional or beginning student, December 25, 2007
This review is from: New Dimensions in Photo Processes, Fourth Edition: A Step by Step Manual for Alternative Techniques (Paperback)
This is truly a step-by-step manual in alternative photographic processes. This is the 4th edition, which tells you that the author has succeeded in expanding her knowledge of the subject. I am not a professional artist but was fortunate to be able to enroll in one of Laura Blacklow's workshops so I could begin to do a photo quilt. Laura's way of teaching, immediate and personal is reflected in her book. You feel she is with you every step of the way. The pictures, diagrams and drawings in the book are excellent. This is a must-have book for anyone interested in exploring the relationship of photographic processes and traditional art-making.

This book is not really very visible on the kindle fire. It depends upon illustrations that are delivered in low resolution, and not in color as stated. I don't see much point in buying or renting this book as the information depends upon completeness.
