A breakthrough that has sustained value over time., September 2, 2006
This review is from: New Directions in Sex Therapy: Innovations and Alternatives (Hardcover)
Although New Directions in Sex Therapy was published in 2001, it is a book that continues to be relevant five years after publication. This book is a series of essays by leading researchers and clinicians in the field of Sex Therapy, edited by Peggy Kleinplatz PhD, who wrote two of the chapters. This book signals a departure from the mechanistic and technique orientation of the seminal work of Masters and Johnson. It also signals a signifcant departure from the work of Helen Kaplan Singer. The book points the sex therapist to a view of sexuality based on empirical reasearch, while at the same time exposing the reader to alternative treatment methodology. Examples are experiential models of working with clients and workshops as viewed through the lens of Feminist theory. The reader is often brought back to sexuality in the context of relationship, whether it be with a shorterm partner, a lifelong spouse, or finally the relationship with oneself. I found the book to be very important for current and future sex educators, counselors, therapists and others who are interested in the topic. I recommend this book without hesitation.

Excellent book, January 16, 2007
This review is from: New Directions in Sex Therapy: Innovations and Alternatives (Hardcover)
Overall a very informative book for those interested in a more narrative approach to sex therapy. Dr Kleinplatz provides a concise but comprehensive examination of the evolution of the major sex therapy theories and critiques the effectiveness and limitations of each. Her writing style is somewhat technical but her approach seeks to find ways to connect with clients on an emotional level and allows them to define their difficulties and explore their desires in a collaborative and supportive manner. I would only add that Dr. Kleinplatz is even better in person and would strongly reccomend attending any classes/lectures that she may offer.
