Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2. A dog's-eye view of what it is like to be the new kid on the block. Tootsie, Miss Pettibone's Bijon Frise, is the epitome of the pampered pooch. When he joins Danny's Dogwalking Group, his timidity and inexperience make him a victim of the other rough-and-tumble dogs, as well as the object of Danny's exasperation. Harassed and teased, the pup eventually becomes an unlikely hero when he inadvertently stops a robber while the other dogs shake and cower. There is no inherent lesson in this story because acceptance comes only from achieving a great feat. However, the theme of bullies versus underdogs is a familiar one and as such, the story works. The cartoon illustrations are busy and full of frenetic energy?the dogs are expressive and funny. This easy read asks nothing of its readers but enjoyment.?Christy Norris, Valley Cottage Library, NY

From Booklist

Ages 4^-6. It's tough to be new, whether it is in a play group, in a class, or in a new neighborhood. That message comes across loud and clear in Hazen's appealing story about pampered pup Tootsie and his first day with Danny's Dogwalking Group. Alley's busy, comical pen-and-ink and watercolor pictures are a lively complement, showing Danny's veteran walkers playing all sorts of mean, sneaky tricks on the group's newest member. But just when it appears Tootsie's dogwalking days are done, Light-fingered Louie, with a bag full of loot, crosses his path. The satisfying outcome isn't hard to guess. A good choice for reading aloud and discussing. Stephanie Zvirin
