4.0 out of 5 stars Another banger from 7LES!
Although a little different from their other albums, A New Dope is a tight album from 7L & Esoteric. Great lyrics as always from eso, and the beats that 7L is coming with this time is some off the wall stuff that we haven't heard before, check out the twin peaks loop on perfect person, genius stuff. If you haven't heard of 7LES before, cop their earlier stuff and then...

2.0 out of 5 stars What Happened to these "Rising Rebels"?
If you loved 7L & Esoteric's old stuff, do not pick up this album. It sounds completely different than "Dangerous Connections" or DC2. The beats are much heavier and not catchy what so ever. It's not music you can knod your head to, its music you want to sit in a dark room and cut yourself to. It's very "pop" sounding and and Esoteric doesn't bring any fire in his lyrics...

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best hip hop records this year, July 11, 2006
This review is from: New Dope (Audio CD)
This album is solid from start to finish. Eso's lyrics are witty and smart. The production is also top notch. Daisycutta with Kool Keith is one of my favorite tracks so far this year. Definitely an album worth picking up.

..but this album is FIYAAAA!!
i'm into OLD SCHOOLish/futuristic beats like this,
(like how timbo & missy use old beats and make 'em new..)
and eso's styles are on point.
i'd heard their stuff years ago,
but wasn't inclined to spend money on it,
but this album is well worth my money.
i went to a friends' house to listen to the older stuff,
and i personally like this new one best.
he kinda sounds like jay-z on some of it..
not sure if that's good or bad for you..

What happened to piano beat tracks like "Rise of the Rebel" and "Battlefield". I don't no what this CD is, but it's not the 7L & Esoteric I know and love. This isn't "A New Dope" it's "A New Nope".

1.0 out of 5 stars If you like babytalk..., August 8, 2006
This review is from: New Dope (Audio CD)
Then you'll like this album. Anyone can ask me about the other c.d.'s and I'm not gonna' lie Esoteric ripped it up and remained my fav m.c. for a while... until the AOTP c.d. and this dropped. What the f*ck happened? He tried to change his style or something, but it just sounds like babytalk or someone whining in half the songs. The other ones, it sounds like he's trying to outwit someone as HALF-witted as 50 cent. Esoteric could've destroyed any mainstream fool in moments with his style and speed in freestyles, but that level of hardcore raw rap has dropped with this album. 7L i was never a huge fan of anyway, but I did respect many of his beats. However, on this c.d. Not one. Which is possibly just added to because Eso handles many of the beats...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what i would expect from 7l & ES, July 2, 2006
This review is from: New Dope (Audio CD)
When i first picked up on this rap duo back in 2000 i couldnt believe how good it was. Soul purpose, DC were off the hook. DC2 was alrigt and then this new joint. I couldnt believe my ears wehen i heard this junk. ES raps about "i like books/i like amy smarts looks"...goes on to say he likes roast beef sandwhiches or some thing along the lines of that. VERY DISSAPOINTED! If you want a new 7l joint, buy MOMENT OF RARITIES. its old 7l & es thats been released. I dont know where they are going but i dont like it and i think they should have stuck to thier old hip hop routine.

4.0 out of 5 stars The one that got me hooked., June 30, 2007
This review is from: New Dope (Audio CD)
I had bought a few 7LES cds about 8 months ago, during a period when I was trying to get back into hip-hop but wasn't really feeling ANY music at all; I think my brain couldn't handle anymore music. I listened to them a few times then forgot about 'em.

After about 6 months I realized I still hadn't opened A New Dope. Well when I did, I was stunned. This album has fire, and Esoteric has improved plenty and even further diversified his style. This album is the reason I've picked up the other CDs I was missing. I still need Warning: Dangerous Exclusives and Dope Not Hype, though.

People might hate on Esoteric, but this and DC2 show an evolved man who continues to improve, and I would find it hard to dislike the lyrical content on this album, save for maybe 2 or 3 songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Singin' shake whatcha mama gave ya to a thug, May 7, 2007
This review is from: New Dope (Audio CD)
While this album is obviously not for everyone, it is an AMAZING album. It to me was paying homage to what hip hop once was. Now alot of these kids out here who did not grow up listening to old school hip hop(not like when you hear a 16 year old call Dre's "The Chronic" old school) will probably have little respect for an album like this. 7L's beats are always catchy and there is no exception with this album and ESO's flow is non-stop throughout. Great samples too, 7L even samples the Twin Peaks theme on Perfect Person.

3.0 out of 5 stars could go either way, November 8, 2006

This is my first 7L and Esoteric album and I didn't know what to expect. I heard them once on an iTunes radio station, remembered the name and came across them a couple week later at my record store. I've never heard their previous work, so I'm making no comparisons here, just observations of this album. It's got an old school feel to it, which is kinda nice to hear. Esoteric (he's the one rapping, right?) drops some clever rhymes. Although nothing special, it's got a nice, slow flow to it. I was a little dissapointed with some of the music, but the samples 7L uses are pretty good (twoards the end of 3 Minute Classic and then Cemetary is just hilarious). The reason I only gave this 3 stars is because although Eso has some good and funny rhymes, his voice and flow get boring after a few listens and the music on some songs make me skip to the next track. It's a good album to listen to every once in awhile, just to listen to something different then the same old underground (admit it, underground rappers sound a lot better than the mainstream crap, but they do tend to all have a similar sound to them). I can honestly say I don't have anything else like this in my collection.
