Book Description

New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture November 29, 2008
Southern music has flourished as a meeting ground for the traditions of West African and European peoples in the region, leading to the evolution of various traditional folk genres, bluegrass, country, jazz, gospel, rock, blues, and southern hip-hop. This much-anticipated volume in The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture celebrates an essential element of southern life and makes available for the first time a stand-alone reference to the music and music makers of the American South.

With nearly double the number of entries devoted to music in the original Encyclopedia, this volume includes 30 thematic essays, covering topics such as ragtime, zydeco, folk music festivals, minstrelsy, rockabilly, white and black gospel traditions, and southern rock. And it features 174 topical and biographical entries, focusing on artists and musical outlets. From Mahalia Jackson to R.E.M., from Doc Watson to OutKast, this volume considers a diverse array of topics, drawing on the best historical and contemporary scholarship on southern music. It is a book for all southerners and for all serious music lovers, wherever they live.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Published in 1989, The Encyclopedia of Southern Culture was a hefty one-volume work organized into 24 thematic sections. This new edition, which began with the appearance of Volume 1: Religion and Volume 2: Geography  in 2006, will consist of 24 separate volumes, each focusing on a particular topic. The volume covering music follows the same format as other volumes, with two alphabetical sequences. The first provides 30 longer thematic essays, and the second features 174 shorter entries on musical genres, individuals, instruments, and more. The number of entries has nearly doubled from what was provided in the first edition, and many of the entries that appeared in the first edition have been revised. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Review

"The general reader or the scholar . . . will find this encyclopedia a handy introduction to southern music."
--The Alabama Review

"A substantial revision and updating of this monumental work. . . . The entries in the Music volume are well written, accessible, and insightful, and collectively, they make fascinating reading and provide a useful resource for checking basic historical and biographical facts. . . . A first-rate reference work and the only one, at least in a single volume, that covers all of the major musical genres of the American South. It belongs on the bookshelves of scholars and general readers alike who are interested in the region, its culture, or American music."
-- North Carolina Historical Review
