Revisiting Deerfield, MA,
By A Customer
This review is from: New England Outpost: War And Society In Colonial Deerfield (Paperback)
NEW ENGLAND OUTPOST: WAR AND SOCIETY IN COLONIAL DEERFIELD, by Richard I. Melvoin is an excellent historical account of early Western MA. If you have ancestors who lived in Deerfield in the colonial era, it is fascinating to read about their lives. I visted Deerfield in June 2000 and reading the book is an excellent preparation for a visit.

This review is from: New England Outpost: War And Society In Colonial Deerfield (Paperback)
This is the best, most readable book about colonial Deerfield, Mass. It's challenging to navigate some of the old volumes about the 1704 massacre given the differences between current and 18th Century English, but everything you'd ever want to know about Indians in the Connecticut River Valley, the three (not just one) Indian attacks on the Deerfield settlement, and daily life in the settlement is right here in Mr. Melvoin's book. He knows Deerfield because he lived there - as did I. You will not be disappointed by this fine work.
