Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Readers of this guide to real manners for real people in real situations may wonder if Stewart herself is for real as she delineates, in alphabetical format, the gracious way to belch and blow your nose, gossip, eavesdrop, inform a male his fly is open, conduct an office love affair and deal with food stuck in one's teeth. Still, the redoubtable author of White Gloves and Party Manners offers her rigid recommendations in earnest, and although she includes sections on single parenting and live-in lovers, much of her advice is outmoded. Her tips for change-of-address announcements and skiing etiquette may be innocuous, but other suggestions are gratuitous, didactic, even offensivewomen (but not men) are discouraged from displaying family photographs at the office because "the boss may wonder how dedicated you are to work if you spend much of your time gazing at a photo of your child." From Library Journal

Stewart has removed the stuffiness and stiffness from formal etiquette and written a basic guide that people will read. While maintaining that "manners are primarily a matter of treating others well . . . as you would like to be treated," she has preserved the art of gracious entertaining and adapted traditional etiquette to today's lifestyles. She discusses practical manners as well as the new etiquette (dating, cohabitation, single parents, and more) in an easy-to-use cross referenced alphabetic format. The comprehensive coverage includes sections on foreign menu terms, eating in foreign countries, executive manners, and college life. Stewart's previous publications include Executive Etiquette. Well worth adding to general collections. Ann E. Cohen, Broome Cty. P.L., Binghamton, N.Y.

5.0 out of 5 stars You Can Find What You Need Quickly, June 16, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The New Etiquette: Real Manners for Real People in Real Situations--An A-to-Z Guide (Paperback)
The best thing about this book is that it is written alphabetically with the headings in nice big letters so you can find what you want quickly. Ms. Stewart does not overwhelm you with exhausting detail, but gets to the point quickly and efficiently. She covers all the predictable things plus a few extras to reflect the times - homosexuality (actually she says the correct term is gays), manners for children, e-mail etiquette. I'd say she covered it all and I would recommend this book as an easy and informative reference tool. It's fun just to read it for no other reason than it is so enjoyable.
