4.0 out of 5 stars Same Albert, New format, March 17, 2006
This review is from: New Fat Albert & Cosby Kids (DVD)
The classic 36 were memorable and teriffic. What I enjoyed most about this series was the music at the end of each episode. Fat Albert fans, pick up all three volumes of this classic Saturday morning show since you won't see Fat Albert anywhere in the US right now. Now, on with the review.....

The New Fat Albert Show features new storylines that are a little serious than the previous episodes. Pornography, Divorce (also done in the 1973 episode "Mom or Pop"), gun violence, etc were covered here. The kids would also be bussed to another school with a new teacher, Mrs. Wutcher (she was white with Mrs. Breyfogle's voice). The Junkyard band segments are now replaced with The Brown Hornet, an African American superhero similar to the Green Hornet. Stinger and Tweeterbell were his sidekicks. Cosby provided his voice. Lou Scheimer's intro/cliffhanger narrations were hilarious. This was a show within a show where Albert and the gang would learn from that episode, which would mirror the same plot/problem they encounter. 8 episodes from 1979 were made, and aired with The Adventures of Fat Albert and The Cosby Kids on syndication. (The 1984 titles were placed on them as with the 36 eps, which made it 44 eps CBS aired)The remaining eps from the 1980-82 seasons have/had the 1979 main opening/closing titles as "The New Fat Albert Show and the Cosby Kids." This was because they weren't packaged with the CBS (1972-77) and the new 65 (1984) syndicated eps. The theme song is a bit different as Bill says "Hey, Hey, Hey, The New Fat Albert Show with Fat Albert and The Cosby Kids!, plus The Brown Hornet!" then the Brown Hornet title card shows up as he brings it down. The opening scenes are the same as the 1972 version (with the addition of episode scenes from the Brown Hornet), but of course, Cosby looks a bit different. Then the New Fat Albert Show title card shows up. Thanks to research there are now 110 eps total, plus 5 TV specials. Many considered the 1980-82 season the "lost" episodes since they haven't aired after CBS cancelled this series.

Much like the last releases, They will be sped up, and may be edited (the first 2 were with the removal of scenes where Albert and the gang were joking around while the song was being revised and after it was over. That was a bad move on Hallmark when they owned the Filmation library at the time). After this, expect the series to conclude with "The Adventures of Fat Albert and The Cosby Kids" DVD sets. This set was supposed to be released last year, but I'm looking forward to buy this last set to add my collection from the CBS era. Bill Cosby, Thank you for this groundbreaking series.
