Book Description

DK Living March 15, 1998
For the first-time gardener, or for those simply dissatisfied with what they see in their back yard, this practical guide offers solutions to the basic questions gardeners ask. Introductionary sections lay the groundwork for change; the major part of the book is based around 40 step-by-step projects - from taking cut tings and growing vegetables, to building a wildlife pond complete with quick tips and lists of what you will need. Containing 750 pictures, straightforward advice, and a fund of ideas for inventive, easy-to-maintain effects, this is the ideal book for beginners and useful reference for the experienced gardener too. Pippa Greenwood is known through her work on TV and radio, and as a journalist. She is one of the longest-serving presenters on the BBC "Gardeners' World" series, is a panellist of Radio 4's "Gardeners' Question Time", and writes regularly for "The Garden", "Garden Answers", and "Gardeners' World Magazine". She frequently gives demonstrations at garden festivals, and also teaches at the RHS Gardens, Wisley, where she works as a Plant Pathologist. Having just acquired a new garden herself, she is aware of what the "ordinary gardener" needs to know.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Greenwood, a British TV garden show host, presents a nonchallenging introduction to gardening. She briefly reviews garden planning, lawns, beds and borders, fencing, patios and terraces, container gardening, water features, and edibles. Each chapter contains at least one "project," for instance, laying a brick path or pruning a rose bush. The illustrations are plentiful and inspiring; most are color photographs, but there are also line drawings to illustrate particular techniques. Some effort seems to have been made to list cultivars known in the United States, especially in the vegetable section, but the sample backyard gardens are very much in the English style, and there is neither a USDA hardiness zone map nor a discussion of the differences in gardening in New England or Arizona. An attractive volume to lure the novice, who will soon need to move on to more comprehensive works like Barbara Damrosch's The Garden Primer (LJ 2/15/89).?Molly Newling, Piscataway P.L.,

From Booklist

Information in this gardening guide is divided into numerous separate sections, with each one devoted to details of an individual topic. Be it advice on planting and designing a new garden, tips on protecting tender specimens, or instructions for controlling weeds and insects, there are ample color photographs isolated throughout the text to boldly illustrate every area of interest and to provide step-by-step instructions. Beginners, in particular, should enjoy Greenwood's consistent counsel on various facets of plant culture and care. For more experienced gardeners, there are innovative suggestions for problem areas. Overall, the book's design brings considerable freshness to standard, if fairly extensive, material. Alice Joyce --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars great gift for the gardener, April 26, 2000
This review is from: The New Gardener (Hardcover)
I saw this book on accident one day while visiting a friend. She had borrowed the book from a co-worker because she was starting a new flower garden and didn't know where to start. I was quite impressed with the pictures, also the instructions on planting beds, containers, and borders. It has suggestions for the seasoned gardener and everything the new gardener needs to know. My Mom is in the process of purchasing a new home and this book will make a great Mother's Day gift.

4.0 out of 5 stars a good start to gardening, February 14, 2010
This review is from: The New Gardener (Hardcover)
Actually this is a very interesting book for someone who is new to gardening. The pictures of colorful and descriptive. Garden basics are included: site and exposure, weather, micro-climates and making the most of your soil, important issues that the newbie should remember. If you want some ideas that include beds and borders, paths, boundaries, and water features then this is a nice start.

For the more advanced gardener it includes ideas for container gardening, edible gardening, greenhouses and transforming your lawn. As with anything outdoors you must remember plant zones and what is appropriate to plant for your area. A little weak in this area it is still a nice book to give as a gift. I intend on letting my daughter, who needs ideas for her house, have this enjoyable garden book.
