This is the first Fear Street book ever. I didn't really like it. R.L. Stine definitely improved on the rest of the series. Anyway, some parts of the book were interesting. The prologue really wants to make you read the book. But once you get to the end, you realize that the prologue completely threw you off to the big surprise.

Make sure to look for Cory, Lisa, and Cory's friend David making guest appearances in other Fear Street books. Two of them are 'Missing' and 'Broken Hearts.'

A Review by Anna

Cory Brooks finds himself madly in love with a girl he hardly knows. She is all that he can think about, he cannot concentrate on anything without thinking of her. Lisa Blume, Corys neighbor and best friend also has an obvious love interest. She is constantly trying to get Corys attention towards her while he is repetitively requiting his love for Anna Corwin, the hauntingly beautiful girl whom he is excessively interested in. It was love at first sight, but was she really what Cory had perceived her to be? Is Lisa still only a friend in Corys mind?

The only thing I did not enjoy in reading this book was putting it down at night. This book kept my heart at a racing speed with its suspenseful twists and turns leading well up to the climax. The beginning was well informative as to what was going on however it kept me lingering with questions about the events that where occurring. Each event tied in with another because all of the people in the story were connected with the conspiracy going on in their very own town. The threats and attempted pursuing of those threats made me smile with shock and sometimes minor disbelief. The ending perfectly answered all of my questions in a quite refreshingly satisfying way. All of the ends were tied with a long explanation that made so much sense it caused me to wonder why I had not thought of it myself.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a story that keeps them on their toes, even those who dont enjoy reading very often. This book is a great read for people who can appreciate a good mystery or a suspenseful thriller. Those people would love this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unpredictable Ending, February 12, 1998

This review is from: The New Girl (Fear Street, No. 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was scary and thrilling! I thought that R.L. Stine made it too long for such a simple point, but I just love the way his books are so unpredictable! If you are really into Fear Street books, I reccomend the book, The Face! Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCITING, AND ROMANTIC, December 4, 2000
By

This was the best book I've ever read from R.L. Stine. It was full of romance. Kisses, kisses kisses. R.L. Stine used very precise words to describe emotions in the book. "She pressed her face harder against his" made me blood boil. Such a good book. A good romantic book.

Anna Corwin,..or is she? Cory Brooks hungers for Anna Corwin's kisses.

Does Cory end up with Anna? His life long friend, Lisa hopes not. She's in love with Cory, and hopes she'll win his heart. Little Lisa gets jealous, and ends up twisting her ankle. Will Lisa join Anna in death? Is someone stalking her? What's going on in Shadyside? The New Girl explains it all,...

4.0 out of 5 stars Oh how I love the cheese., September 26, 2011
The book turned out to be not nearly as sinister as the blurb intones but it had its creeptastic moments all the same. Stine knows how to build suspense and keep the reader hanging as the plot moves along. Really, it's no wonder he's been putting out books for so long. He doesn't have an underlying evil about his writing like Stephen King does but it's spooky. It does the trick if you happen to be young and reading it in the dark. It gets under your skin just enough that you turn the light on an extra notch and settle back in to read.

THE NEW GIRL is the first book in the Fear Street series and I'd say (while I've read them way out of order) this would be a pretty good start. If I happened to be a young teen wandering a book store in the late 80s and picked it up, I'd totally get hooked on the series (because I haven't done it now, obviously, O_o). It's sort of your typical ghost story with the spooky street and the creepy houses and the scary stories that all of the locals grew up with. It's a great beginning and scene-setter to get it all rolling. There's a curse around Fear Street, and here's why.

Now, I wouldn't peg Cory as dumb but he was definitely oblivious to the point of me wanting to smack him upside the head. Whether he just developed some serious tunnel vision or really only had a one track mind, if Cory saw one way, there just wasn't any other way to see it. And I felt for Lisa because she was trying to break through that egg shell head of his and it just wasn't working for 99% of the book. Only after the revelation at the end did Cory finally come around and see a light outside of his own closet.

The ending was a bit disappointing for me because it kind of watered down the rest of the story but it was decent enough. It could have been a hell of a lot worse but there are other avenues that Stine could have taken the plot that would have made is much creepier. But that's pretty classic Stine: a lot of build-up with a nominally happy ending and a pretty rational explanation for everything. Well, as rational as a horror book can get. You come to expect it reading his work.

THE NEW GIRL is a great addition to any cheese lover's library, especially if you can snag a first printing paperback like I have. :) If nothing else it'll make you nostalgic for a time when you didn't have much else to worry about so you could curl up under the blankets with a flashlight and read horror to your heart's content.

5.0 out of 5 stars My First YA Horror Read...and I loved it!, August 11, 2011
I actually don't remember the story anymore, but I remember reading the book. I was 11 and it was on my younger cousin's bookshelf. She and her sisters were playing video games, so I asked if I could read her book. She agreed, I opened the first page...and didn't stop reading. I absolutely loved the thrill ride RL Stine led me on! Next time I was at the library, I found the second book and then the third and then started buying them. Great teen horror!
