Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-5-A cross between "Nancy Drew" and Little House on the Prairie, this second book in the series is weak as a mystery and as historical fiction. Mandie's insatiable curiosity leads her to spy on the new neighbors at the old Conley place. When Faith, the girl she spotted through the window, shows up at school, Mandie tries hard to befriend her, but the newcomer wants nothing to do with her or any of her fellow students. Finding out that Faith and her grandmother, a former teacher disfigured in a fire, are living in poverty, Mandie organizes the rest of the community. Not only do they clean and fix up the rundown home, but they also provide them with livestock and offer the woman a trip to New York to see a specialist. The book ends with directions for making a "friendship bank" to hold notes of encouragement. This title is below-average series fare for younger readers than Leppard's "Mandie" books (Bethany House).

More About the Author

Lois began her first Mandie story when she was only eleven years old. But eventually the manuscript was tucked away in a drawer and forgotten. Lois went on to attend Furman University and studied music for several years in New York City where she and her sister sang professionally. Some years ago, Lois was prompted to pull that old manuscript out and began to work on Mandie's story-of her childhood in the South at the turn of the century and her Cherokee heritage. The rest is history and now the MANDIE BOOKS series have sales nearing six million copies! Lois writes from her home in South Carolina. Enthusiastic young fans fill her mailbox with their insightful responses to her stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Neighborly Love, June 14, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The New Girl (Young Mandie Mystery #2) (Paperback)
This book gives us a glimps of what neighborly love and kindness use to be like. The character, Mandie, has a sweet heart and curious nature. There is a new girl in town, and Mandie is set on making friends with her. The setting is a small rural town. The story was like reading a "Little House on the Prairie" saga. I was surprised the way the book took off in an unsuspected twist. The book is a quick and interesting read. My 7 & 10 year old daughters liked it so much, they have asked for the next book, "The Mystery at Miss Abigail's". I liked the book because it showed my girls a compassionate way to help a family.

The book I read is called "The New Girl". This book is mainly about a girl named Faith. She moved to a new house and doesnt know anybody. She is the same age as Mandy. Mandy is Faith's neighbor. Mandy cant wait to have a new friend, but Faith doesnt want to be friends with her. It turns out that Mandy has a secret, and the secret is that her parents dies in a deadly fire. Faith thinks that she started it. What I liked about this book was the part when Mandy is trying to become friends with Faith and how Mandy is doing all these things to become friends with her. This reminds me of another story of me and my friends. She didnt want to be friends with me because she missed her old friends and her old house. What I disliked about this book was that Faith could of been a little more polite to Mandy. I think she was a little too harsh to her. And the book was too short, and I really liked this book. My favorite part in this book was again when Mandy was trying to be friends with Kate, and how Mandy was being so nice to her. I liked that Mandy would do whatever to be friends with her.
