1.0 out of 5 stars What a joke.
Notre Dame hasn't won a bowl game in twenty years. They've been embarassed by top competition for the last five or ten years. Notre Dame hasn't won a bowl game in twenty years. They've been embarassed by top competition for the last five or ten years. They have the lowest ranked offense in the Division 1-A this year, with a grand total of -14 yards rushing through week 3. They have, perhaps, the worst offensive line I have ever seen a prominent program allow onto the field. Charlie Weis lied to QB Demetrius Jones (promising him the starting job, then handing it to Claussen), then threw a temper tantrum and refused to release Jones from his scholarship when he transferred. Where is the "decided schematic advantage" promised by Weis when he took the job? Where are the recruits? A lot of teams have to play underclassmen, but they manage to score an offensive touchdown within the first month of the season.

Oh, and Charlie Weis likely was the benefit of the Patriots' systematic and illegal cheating.

1.0 out of 5 stars On his own players now..., October 16, 2007
This review is from: The New Gold Standard: Charlie Weis and Notre Dame's Rise to Glory (Hardcover)
This is a book written before the facts were in. Not only is Coach W destroying what great progress Tyrone was making, but it is heading way, way down in the wrong direction. Weis did manage to take ND to two BCS games, but both were undeserved berths - the team was wiped all over the field each time.

Year one, Weis did fine... 9-3 - using Tyrone's players. Year two, not so bad, though easier schedule 10-3 overall.. again using Heisman Candidate Quinn... another Willingham recruit. Now this year, 2007, Charlie stands on most of his own scheme and own players. What do we have? 1-6 through first 7 games. One of the worst offenses in the country, if not the worst. Probably the worst defense. Lies to media and players. Five players have left the school. Players have been charged with crimes. Plenty of "going on 4th and 6 from your own 22 yard line" in the first half. Also, plenty of suing Doctors for your hogie addiction.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Price of Gold has Clearly gone down, November 3, 2007
This review is from: The New Gold Standard: Charlie Weis and Notre Dame's Rise to Glory (Hardcover)
Go Navy! Why would you write this book in the first place? "The New Gold Standard"? On what how to ruin a program? Or is this season part of his master plan: to win a bowl game? Well Notre Dame fans you have him for ten more years. Maybe in that time he will win one meaningful game. He has the same record that Ty did when he was fired, but I guess you would not want to think about that when you have the self proclaimed smartest man in all football.

1.0 out of 5 stars New standard, huh?, October 25, 2007

Well, here we are two years later and Notre Dame is the laughingstock of the nation with its 1-7 record. Charlie Weis has exactly the same record (20-13) as his disgraced predecessor, Tyrone Willingham. Think it was a tad premature to write this book?

As for the book itself, it's pure fluff and already seems laughably outdated. I suppose it's worth reading for the unintentional comedy it provides.

This is one of the best works of fiction in the twenty-first century. Hats off to Charlie Weis, the Notre Dame football team and entire Southbend community!

1.0 out of 5 stars BLEEDING BLUE & GOLD HERE, PLEASE SHOOT ME NOW, November 24, 2008
This review is from: The New Gold Standard: Charlie Weis and Notre Dame's Rise to Glory (Hardcover)
I have not read this book myself .Am a loyal die hard Notre Dame fan here for many many years . Always loved them , still love them , but hey , the Syracuse loss on Saturday, November 22nd , 2008 and played at home put a stake through my heart .I bleed Blue and Gold every day all year round and especially during the football season . A totally disgusting performance . Charlie broke another record in that game , first Notre Dame team to lose to an opponent that had 8 losses . Also first Irish team to lose 14 games in 2 consecutive seasons , wow, and USC game in California on Nov. 29th yet to be played , HELP . A 10 year contract , whats up with that one , 5-year contract was always standard at Notre Dame . The only modern day coach at Notre Dame that probably deserved a 10 year contract , scratch that , deserved a lifetime contract , was the Messiah , Coach Lou Holtz . Hey Tim , get your notes ready for your next book and call it: THE OLD GOLD STANDARD: LOU HOLTZ And Notre Dame's Past Glory Years . Coach Holtz: only head college coach in history to take 6 different teams to bowl games (William & Mary , Arkansas , North Carolina State , Minnesota , Notre Dame , and South Carolina ) , played USC 12 times with a record of 10 wins 1 loss and 1 tie , wow . Only coach in South Carolina history to go to back to back bowl games and win both of them (by the way , Lou defeated Ohio State in both those bowl games, another wow) , and inducted in College Football Hall of Fame, 2008. I can't type anymore , I JUST FUMBLED MY MOUSE HERE , Tony B.

This review is from: The New Gold Standard: Charlie Weis and Notre Dame's Rise to Glory (Hardcover)
What a joke. 0-3 with -14 yards rushing? I guess this is Willingham's fault as well? Before becoming a dynasty they may want to think about scoring an offensive touchdown this year. Geaux TIGERS!! Remeber them ND fans?

1.0 out of 5 stars Seriously? glamour book for a less than glamourous program..., September 6, 2008
This review is from: The New Gold Standard: Charlie Weis and Notre Dame's Rise to Glory (Hardcover)
My the program is the most self-righteous program in all of college football trying to show the country morals (that it doesnt even have)...

Lets see how bad Weis has been with his players (2007)... the only time he won was with... drumroll please... Willingham's players... Brady Quinn that stringbean receiver and the like... it is amazing how everyone likes to blame Willingham for "poor recruiting" for last season's disaster (actually more a sign of notre lame's true colors) but without Willingham's recruiting the 3 and whatever record would have happened the previous two seasons as well...

notre dame football fans tend to not have any real sense of football knowledge as well as their horrible sense of entitlement which is not deserved...

rise to glory??? more like settling into mediocracy...

1.0 out of 5 stars Written too soon, December 2, 2007
This review is from: The New Gold Standard: Charlie Weis and Notre Dame's Rise to Glory (Hardcover)
I like how the author made this book come together. Of course you can write any coach is good after having his first good season, and 2nd, but he had Brady Quinn as QB. He lost that, and now he has nothing...His stats are almost identical to Willingham's now, far from a gold standard. Maybe the author should have waited to publish the book before just thinking about $$$ since anything with ND+Football in its title will sell to the over obsessive fans over a crappy program.
