Pretty good!, September 20, 2010
This review is from: New Gospel Parallels, Vol. 1: The Synoptic Gospels (Foundations and Facets: New Testament) (Hardcover)
I'm NOT a fan of Robert Funk's academics. Were it more relevant, I'd enjoy discussing that at length, but it's not.
This Gospel parallel is VERY handy. He highlights words that appear in multiple Gospels. This makes redaction criticism much clearer, at least to an English reader. It is also very helpful is showing why Q makes so much sense.
On the other hand, Funk has included a number of extremely questionable gospels alongside the four that should be here. I would point out that Funk is one of a tiny minority of scholars who have asserted that these other documents/fragments are worthy of attention to the point that the man on the street probably thinks there are other Gospels the church has suppressed. So while I'm irritated at the press Funk undeservedly gets, I ignore that column and get tremendous use out of this Gospel parallel for the 4 Gospels that are useful to me.
I recommend it to those who have settled in their mind what they think of these other Gospels. If one can ignore that column, this is a marvelously helpful Gospel parallel. I know of no other one that has these strengths.
