Stone Coal solid,

This review is from: New Grange (Audio CD)
If you happen to be a fan of any or all of the musicians in NewGrange then it'd do you well to purchase this cd. This cd would also be a good place to start if you haven't heard these people before. This cd has a down-home rural feel that is all but impossible to love (unless of course you hate that sort of thing). I wasn't too familiar with Tim O'Brien back when I bought this cd but now I am a growing fan. His vocals are fantastic on Rock In A Weary Land and Stone Coal West Virginia. Not that this is a vocal cd though, most of the tracks are beautiful instrumentals... from raucous hoedowns to yearning ballads. Most of all, don't confuse this cd with some sort of pop-country fluff. Rural? Yes. Pop-country? No. This cd has great songs and compositions, masterful solo breaks, and tons of heart and soul. In rock there is the "supergroup"... those bands that happen every once in a while where already famous people get together and do an album, usually an album that ends up sounding cluttered, as if too many cooks (and celebrity ego's) are in the kitchen. NewGrange could be considered a supergroup of sorts since every member of the group is such a musical giant, the difference here though is that ego's have been set aside and the sole focus is on being a true musical unit. They bring out all the melodic beauty in this material and make you want to dance around your back porch.

A supergroup that's more than the sum of its parts,

This review is from: New Grange (Audio CD)
Newgrange is the brilliant Darol Anger, Mike Marshall, Alison Brown, Todd Phillips, Philip Aaberg and Tim O'Brien. They released the incomparable A Christmas Heritage last year; this disc ranges a little wider in mood and style. Absolutely first-rate acoustic roots music.
