Killer FUNK by Groove Holmes, Bernard Purdie & Co.,
By Daddy-o "paintfink" (Beatsville, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: New Groove (Audio CD)
Can GROOVE MERCHANT do any wrong? I am just thankful that japan (P-VINE)has good taste in jazz/funk or else we would probably never see these G.M. re-issues or Herbie Hancock & The Headhunters-Flood (LIVE), Fred Wesley/Maceo Parker & The Horny Horns or Eddie Hazel- Rest in P, all essential for your jazz & funk collection. Now back to Groove Holmes-New Groove, the opening track "Red Onion" is the killer off the album-funky goodness throughout. All the tracks have a nice groove and funk to them with Bernard Purdie holdin' down the beat (check out the drum break on "You Got It Bad Girl"). I took off one star beacause of the vocals on "No Trouble on the Mountain"- it's a funky track, but I am not to hip on jazz of any style with vocals. This is still my favorite Groove Holmes album and a nice chunk of essential jazz/funk. Recommended are some other Groove Merchant re-issues like: Larry Willis- Inner Crisis, Jimmy McGriff- Dig on It & Groove Holmes- Night Glider. Ya Dig?
