Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Rothgeb's detailed and immediate memoir, based heavily on his wartime diaries, establishes the human dimensions of a still-neglected aspect of WW II: the role of the Army Air Force in the southwest Pacific. The author flew P-38 Lightnings in the 39th Fighter Squadron of the 5th Air Force in an arena where the operations were on a small scale compared to those in Europe. Rothgeb, whose 139 combat missions mainly involved escorting bombers or transports, vividly depicts the living conditions and the operational environment of war waged on a shoestring from improvised airstrips on the island of New Guinea. Navigation over the oceans and jungles was as big a challenge as the Japanese fighters. The pervasively hostile conditions generated high levels of cohesion and comradeship among the 39th, who suffered relatively few casualties. Recommended for readers interested in aviation history and in WW II.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exciting and well edited account of the Pacific air war, September 11, 2003

It would be hard to improve on this work. The reader will enjoy Rothgebs in-depth account of his war time experiences in the states and overseas. Student pilots should enjoy his lighter moments in pilot training flying taildraggers. His meeting in theater with notables including Lindbergh, and ace Richard Bong is also detailed. Thanks to Lindbergh pilots learned to lean their fuel mixture to extend their range and total flying time. Combat flying the P38, P47, and then a C47 "Gooney Bird" one learns how versatile and just plain gutsy these pilots are. Rothgeb was truly "a man amongst men". We owe them all a great debt.

If you really want to know what it was like being a pilot in the Pacific during WWII read Wayne's first hand account. Wayne was a fixture on our local television farm show when I was growing up and you would never guess that this gentle unassuming man lived the life that he did during the war. Wayne is a hero in his own right; but his book never glorifies his military service, it just gives you an excellent and detailed account of his contribution to maintaining our freedom. Thank you Wayne for your service.
