Aimed at teens with numb senses of humor, The New Guy earns its chuckles mostly by accident. Most of the comedy is DOA, although the cast--especially DJ Qualls in the title role--possesses a modicum of scrappy charm. DJ plays a "blip" on his high school’s social radar, briefly jailed for chronic misbehavior and mentored in coolness by a fellow inmate (Eddie Griffin), who becomes the funky "new guy" at a new school, where he’s worshipped as a mysterious hipster and attracts the hottest cheerleader (Eliza Dushku). Directed without a shred of inspiration (by a cowriter of There’s Something About Mary) and looking like a drab 16-millimeter industrial film, the movie would be a waste of time were it not for its abiding cheerfulness, rock-star cameos (Henry Rollins, Gene Simmons, Tommy Lee), Lyle Lovett as DJ’s dad, and a fresh cast that almost makes this lowbrow mess worthwhile. --Jeff Shannon

4.0 out of 5 stars "The New Guy"-Review, May 11, 2002

"The New Guy" is about a teenage dork-a-zoid named Dizzy. He had a reputation as the biggest loser in school. Dizzy was often beat up by school jocks and had many pranks pulled on him. He was sick and tired of all these bullying. When Dizzy was sent to prison for vandalizing school property, his fellow cellmate(played by Eddie Griffin)sympathized for him and trained him to be tough and cool. When Dizzy left prison with a new look and tougher attitude, he transfered to another highschool hoping his new image would make him popular.
This is an excellent, funny and well made movie. It doesn't even need all the "sexual" scenes like in Amercan Pie or Van Wilder in order to make it "enjoyable." Recommanded for everyone who enjoys a good laugh and a touching story about a guy who goes from zero to hero. Dj Qualls and Eddie Griffin puts on a down-to-earth hilarious performance in "The New Guy." I for one loves this movie. I been yearning to see it ever since I saw a preview of it during the summer of 2001, but it was worthwhile the wait. Go see it everyone!!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Directors Cut, July 27, 2005
This review is from: The New Guy (Director's Cut) (DVD)
This movie is FUNNY! If you are looking for a raunchy, rude, and wild movie, The New Guy:Directors Cut is for you. This version is not all that different from the original version. There are a few new scenes, including Gil (DJ Qualls) making out with Eliza Dushku in the sprinklers and some akward talks with Gil, his father, and the councilor . All in all, this is the version to buy, because it has more adult subject matter. And, who doesn't enjoy that?

4.0 out of 5 stars A good movie.... for certain people, November 6, 2004

Anyone looking for teen melodrama, standard comedy, or normal people needs to mosey on away from this DVD. Yes you, shoo. This movie isn't for you. You'll probably hate it.

Now that those weirdos are gone, let me tell you why I love The New Guy. This movie isn't very good, and that is its strongest point. It exists to make fun of teen melodramas with a great assembly of random guest stars, completely mediocre cinematography, some movie mocking moments, and general randomness. This movie doesn't take itself seriously for a second, and neither should you. The whole thing is like a litany of "When really odd people do odd things and more odd random things happen to them". If this sounds like you, someone you know, or someone you used to be, then you'll enjoy this movie. If you can relax, have no expectations, and just let it flow I garentee you'll spend the film doubled over. It features over the top geeks like a midget tuba player, a couple ugly-pretty girls, a fat black kid, and a greasy haired Asian guy. The soundtrack adds to every humorous moment by sounding like an Oscar winner meeting a NOW thats what I call music CD. Most of the guest stars are not big names, but that one guy from that one 80's band or that one tv show. And they pop up in the most random places, like Lyle Loveitt with a marshmellow burning in his face and Jermiane Dupri's excellent delivery of "whose the [...] now?". DJ Qualls does a wonderful job in the title role although you're probably going "who the heck is DJ Qualls?". Eliza Dushku is hot hot hot.

So if you're an interesting and random person looking for an easy going and random DVD to pop in one day, I would reccomend picking up The New Guy.
