Book Description

January 24, 2005
The history of the New Haven Fire Department dates back to December 29, 1789, when Mayor Roger Sherman, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, formed the volunteer system. The advent of steam fire engines in 1862 marked the end of the volunteer system and the beginning of the full-time paid department, giving New Haven the distinction of having the first professional fire department in Connecticut. New Haven has a long and proud history of tradition in its fire service. Since 1862 there have been only fifteen different chiefs heading the department. New Haven Firefighters tells the story from the days of steamers to the era of the tower ladder.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book on the History of the New Haven Fire Dept, January 14, 2007

This review is from: New Haven Firefighters (CT) (Images of America) (Paperback)
This is a wonderful book with great old photos of the department thru the years. I am proud to say that my father was a Lieutenent in the New Haven Fire Dept. He is depicted in this book, in an infamous photo of a fellow firefighter carrying him, unconscious, from a fire scene.

This review is from: New Haven Firefighters (CT) (Images of America) (Paperback)
I grew up with my grandmother always talking about my great grandfather being a New Haven firemen. My great grandfather's name was William Cleary and he perished in a 1930 fire by an ammonia tank in the basement of a bakery. I bought this book so that I could not only read about my great grandfather, but so that I could read about all of the other heroic men who risked their lives, some even perishing, to save other people's lives. I not only enjoy reading about the various fire departments and firemen in New Haven through all of the decades starting with the early 1900's through present day, but the photos are priceless. The photos display the old firetrucks, the men, and the horrific blazes that the men had to contend with. I couldn't believe how the firemen's uniforms progressed throughout the years and what the early firemen had to endure not only with their rustic uniforms, but with their early modes of transportation. This book is for anyone who wants to read about incredible heros and the actual history of the New Haven fire departments. The tribute to all the firemen who died in the line of duty was very touchung. I felt that this book was written by a person who lived and breathed as a fireman. It made me feel proud to know that I had a courageous hero in my family. Don't pass up this historical, brilliant read. Audra Riccitelli
