This review is from: A New History of the Royal Mint (Hardcover)
This is an important book for numismatists and folk generally interested in English coins. It provides in accessible language, a summary of the developments at the Royal Mint from the Anglo-Saxon times up to the late 1980s when the book was written. The other major histories on the Mint are long out of print and difficult to obtain and Challis' book is a welcome companion. It details the full range of English coins and the means used to produce them. There are two very useful Appendices listing the Mint output and Mint contacts. The History also identifies and describes prominent events and people. Among the 80 Figures and 92 Tables is a photo of the bust of Isaac Newton by Le Marchand that I had not seen before. The great scientist and mathematician was Warden and Master of the Mint from 1696 to 1727.
