Terrific overview of the Pennsylvania Impressionists, December 30, 2006
This review is from: New Hope for American Art (Hardcover)
I'm still not sure what the publishing arrangements were for this book, but I noticed it in B&N long before I actually bought it. It doesn't bear the imprint of any major art publisher, but the reproductions are flawless and, given the book's page size, very impressive. To date, I haven't seen another book that gathers these artists as well-and as impressively-as this one does. Before, during and after the Hudson River School, the Brandywine School, the Red Rose Girls and the Ashcan School, there were the Pennsylvania Impressionists, chief among them Edward Redfield and Daniel Garber. This big book brings them together under one roof. A tip of the hat, if you please, to James Alterman, of Jim's of Lambertville, for seeing the project through to completion.

The plates in this book are amazing. I had never seen American art like that before. A walk through it is truly a joy. Well orchestrated and integrated.

Impressive, Enlightening, Comprehensive yet Simple!, May 15, 2011
This review is from: New Hope for American Art (Hardcover)
This is a very well written, comprehensive, yet simple explanation of America's "gems" of Impressionist Artists that arose from the beautiful countryside of Pennsylvania in New Hope and the encompassing Buck's County. The author's attention to detail, especially with the color plates expresses why we should embrace such valuable artistry. It would behoove our American educational institutions and universities to offer this as a specialty course and enlighten our students about this amazing group of artists! Mr. Alterman reveals passion and inspires all to have "New Hope for American Art"!
