This book provides a wide-ranging survey of the achievements of architects and designers who have set fresh standards for hotels around the world, beginning with the work of Andree Putman, whose Morgans hotel in New York initiated the era of the designer hotel. A picture of international trends emerges, from the grand architectural gestures of John Portman and the innovative interiors of art hotels where rooms are designed by well-known artists, to the flamboyant entertainment architecture of resort complexes and fantasy hotels such as Michael Graves's Disneyworld Swan and Dolphin hotels. A chapter devoted to projects currently under construction or at the planning stage gives an account of new developments and considers the shape of things to come. Over 50 hotels are featured, each illustrated in colour. Plans and diagrams explain the layout and construction of complex buildings. With details of project teams and suppliers, together with biographies of the designers featured, the book is a useful reference guide for designers, architects and anyone involved in the hotel business.
