PreS. From her tiny, snug burrow, Little Mouse spots a beautiful red apple--a perfect snack if she can only squeeze it inside her home. "My little house is too small," she decides. "I'll look for another." Off she wanders, fruit in tow, asking animal friends to take her and her apple into their homes. No one has room, but finally, Mouse finds the perfect spot: right where she started, where the apple--much reduced since hungry Mouse nibbled at it all day--fits just fine. Although a few children may wonder why mouse is so quick to abandon her cozy home, Horacek writes with a pleasing rhythm and word choices that are just right for preschoolers. Children will also enjoy his watercolor-and-cut-paper collages, in shiny fruit and vegetable hues, which alternate between the wide outdoors and cozy animal burrows and feature clever cutaways that show views from outside in, or, with a turn of the page, from inside out. My 2 year old found this book at a friend's house and asked me to read it to her several times. Now, a month later, she asks me to tell her the story about the little mouse all the time. When we go to her tumbling class, she finds the biggest ball, and tries to push it through the different equipment, like the mouse pushing the apple into his hole. Then she asks me to tell her the story again, and she looks for smaller balls to fit into different holes around the tumbling equipment. She even pretends to "eat" the balls to make them smaller so they will fit.

It is a sweet story, with great illustrations and colors, and it gives toddlers a sense of making something big into something smaller.

Every now and then you find a book which is delightful as it is sweet. This book follows the adventures of a mouse who is looking for a new house for herself and her apple. There are cut out holes between the pages which show scenes from outside and inside the other animals homes and really add to the adventure. An instant classic and one which is sure to become your children's favorite!

I love Petr Horacek's illustrations - they're big, bold, colorful, and sweet- they feel almost like children's own drawings. The mouse in this story is very sweet. He's looking for a house to fit the big apple he found, but he keeps nibbling until at the end, he finds the "perfect fit" - his own home! The young children I teach really enjoy this story, and "figuring out" why his old house is suddenly just the right size. This story is also nice for Fall when preschoolers often are learning about apples.
