Early Ellis, before the big band or electronic sound effects,
By A Customer
This review is from: New Ideas (Audio CD)
Don Ellis displays a range of improvisation perhaps unmatched by later works, and a genius for rhthmic quirks that became 5/4 and 7/4 (and 33/16 !) on those more-popular crossover albums. This is straighforward jazz interplay with trumpet, bass, drums, piano, and vibraphone. Good vibrations!

One can see where Don was headed, as he continued to push the envelope on his way to becoming a tremendous innovator.

Great Archival Work,
By Paul Simmons (Sacramento, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: New Ideas (Audio CD)
But . . . start with Electric Bath, Autumn, and Live at Fillmore.Ellis great genius is more accessible in some of his other works. His jazz orchestra work definitely made his mark, and those three are at the top of the list.
