Book Description

WHICH INDUSTRIES WILL BE EXTINCT IN THE 21st CENTURY. This book is as close to a crystal ball as you may ever find. It may make the difference between your company s survival and extinction. Reading the future and being able to spot tomorrow s trends today demands a combination of imagination and knowledge. But if companies are to succeed in the new global economy, they will need that and more they will need a guide. The New Industrial Revolution is that guide, a fascinating examination of two defining eras in American business: The Industrial Revolution and today s Information Age. But it goes one step further to help identify changes, trends and the underlying dynamics that will be necessary to incorporate into any company looking to survive in the evolving worldwide marketplace. Benny Madsen and Rob Brownstein, authors of The New Industrial Revolution: The Power of Dynamic Value Chains, characterize today s Industrial Age by micro-technology, digitalization and low-cost global communication. By comparing the first Industrial Revolution with the New Industrial Revolution, they were able to identify the common denominators that separate the business winners from the business losers based on how well they can: Embrace the concept of value chains and modularization Accelerate product or service design, implementation and manufacturing Eliminate redundancy and valueless costs Determine low-cost systems that work faster to produce high-end results Provide consumers with value, choice and quality for less money The New Industrial Revolution breaks new ground as it helps corporate executives and small business owners with the importance of: Identifying an opportunity and being the first to do so Providing a sequence of differentiated products and marketing them effectively Establishing and fine-tuning an efficient distribution scheme Introducing new products to coincide with declining demand for previous ones The consumer electronics industry has led the way, but the pioneering lessons learned will be crucial to the survival of all industries in the 21st century.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This book provides the concepts to become unreasonable in the sense that progress depends on the unreasonable man (Shaw). A book both historically valuable and forward reaching, it describes past business changes and suggests business and political changes which are occurring and will continue as these dynamics ripple throughout the entire world. --Jim George, corporate vice president (retired), Motorola

Benny Madsen and Rob Brownstein give us a tour de force through the Industrial Revolution and the Information Age, keyed to contributions from advanced microelectronics, enhanced manufacturing and production methods and global telecommunications. Through a clear and entertaining explanation of history and technology, the authors guide the reader through the complexity of advanced manufacturing businesses and how competitive new products find their way to our homes and offices. --Bruce Elbert, founder and president, Application Technology Strategy, Inc.

It takes a keen eye and careful observation to spot a trend. Rob Brownstein and Benny Madsen have both, coupled with meticulous research and a smooth, readable writing style, that make The New Industrial Revolution a great read. --Vic Abell, associate director (retired), Purdue University Computing

5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling read, November 19, 2007
By
blurb (Los Gatos, California United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The New Industrial Revolution: The Power of Dynamic Value Chains (Hardcover)
A compelling read. The authors state the term revolution has two very distinctive meanings, a radical change and a full cycle. Tracing the evolution of manufacturing technology from the first industrial revolution the authors provide insight how the current trends in the electronics industry are both a radical change and a full cycle, and how these can be applied to other industries. History repeats itself, but always with a twist and the authors provide thought provoking insights to current trends such globalization or outsourcing. A must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insight to how global forces are redefining the consumer electronic space, November 16, 2007
This review is from: The New Industrial Revolution: The Power of Dynamic Value Chains (Hardcover)
Provides a overview of how the IC evolution combines with globalization enables a redefinition of the consumer electronic space. Discussed how consumer electronic design is changing by IC suppliers enabling manufacturers to specialize in sub portions of a project and by this driving to overall product cost down.

Detailed description of how the forces are at work and discusses what to expect from other industries, where similar development could be foreseen.

On top of this it provides a detailed overview of the history that paved the way for these events.

The book does make one think again about outsourcing and how and what can get affected by global outsourcing.

5.0 out of 5 stars History is Right In Front of Us, October 3, 2007
This review is from: The New Industrial Revolution: The Power of Dynamic Value Chains (Hardcover)
It's one thing to read about history, in this case The Industrial Revolution. It's another thing to be shown that you are living through the creation of the new history, The New Industrial Revolution. Benny Madsen and Rob Brownstein explain to us what has been going on right in front of our eyes -- the changing landscape of industry. How things are done in the world utilizing the new technologies has made it clear that industry will never be the same.

Take the time to read this clearly thought out and extremely insightful book and you can surely apply the lessons learned to your business. Or simply be able to view the world with a better understanding of how you are affected by the new world order.

I especially liked the history lesson, which is filled with the who did what and when of so many things that I lived through. Fascinating stuff.

Highly reccommended.
