Utterly Underrated,
By
This review is from: New Inside (Audio CD)
Perhaps the least popular of Tiffany's albums, NEW INSIDE has obviously received the least acclaim of all the CDs this former teen idol has ever made. Even so, I see nothing wrong with it at all. True, I loved her previous work with her 1987 debut album--which I'll forever remember to be her BEST work--and her 1988 release HOLD AN OLD FRIEND'S HAND, but this CD still holds its own despite her digression from the 1980s California rock that made her a household name to early-1990s dance.
To begin with, NEW INSIDE combines a decent balance of high-energy dance songs with smooth, heart-warming love ballads, which Tiffany has proven to sing with intensity and conviction back in the late-80s. Likewise, despite what some other Tiffany fans (not to mention some jaded music critics) might otherwise suggest, our favorite redhead does sound more mature and sophisticated on this album than before, thanks in part to the music that accompanies her always-melodious voice. One particular song that proves both points is Diane Warren's "Here In My Heart," which I had heard before as performed by the Scorpions and the Berliner Philharmoniker on their 2000 release, MOMENT OF GLORY; indeed, Klaus Meine and Lyn Liechty performed that song well as a duet, but our girl Tiffany could easily compare with her 1990 recording. Of course, the other songs on this album can easily be classified as "ear candy" in their own right, especially the title track and the ballad "Tenderly." Very good stuff! In short, NEW INSIDE may not have earned Tiffany a well-deserved Grammy, but it still deserves to be remembered in a positive light as an effort on behalf of her continuing efforts to define herself as one of the music industry's most talented, versatile, and--if you'll pardon the bad pun--"noteworthy" players. Way to sing it, Tiff!

...but this is the best and most underrated Tiffany album I have heard so far (I have all of them now except for 'Dreams Never Die'-still waiting for my copy of that.) Even though 'New Inside' was a flop, if people had taken the time to really listen to it and give it a chance you can really tell that Tiffany put WAY more of herself into this album then she did into 'Tiffany' or 'Hold An Old Friend's Hand'-after all, in the thank you notes she herself says, "The music on this album is something I have always wanted to do." Listening to her sing on this CD, it really sounds like she enjoyed making it much more than she did her first two. It's such a shame 'New Inside' didn't get the attention or sales it deserved. Also, check out her most recent CD, 'The Color of Silence'-excellent pop/rock album there and as she did with 'New Inside' she put a lot of herself into that album as well.

I loved it!,

I do not know why when I read the reviews from this cd, I see so many complaints!! I really liked the songs, and besides, this was one of my favorites CDs 14 years ago. I have been a Tiffany fan since she started her career, and I personally believed that she changed and got mature with this experiment. I definitely reccomend this album.

I just got this album last week and it is now one of my faves! I grew up listening to Tiffany and was always curious about this album. Every track is awesome and Tiffany's voice is just an amazing instrument. This should of been a big hit. My faves are: Back In The Groove,Tenderly,Our Love, and Never Run My Motor Down. Buy it!

Generic 1990 : This is Where She Lost It,

Listening to "New Inside" today, its crazy to think that this album is almost 20 years old. It actually sounds much, much older. In fact, I think I would place it at around 1985 in terms of production. Honestly, this is the worst produced Tiffany CD - its so scruffy, so muffled, and the instrumentation drowns out Tiffany's usually beautiful voice about 70% of the time.
Tiffany actually has one of the better back-catalogs of music albums when you compare her to many of her contemporaries. "New Inside" from 1990 was her third album, and it was released at a time when her popularity was crashing. Her 1988/1989 album "Hold an Old Friends' Hand" had sold poorly, and her producers told her to go with a hip new R&B sound to make a spirited comeback. Bad Idea. The 'hip-hop' elements here are laughable. Even more bewildering is the production. Listen to this on hi-fi equipment and you will probably be nauseated at the weak production values and tawdry graphic equalizer used on every track. First Single "New Inside" has a very DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince vibe going for it, and is perhaps the most addictive chorus on the CD. Second track "It's You" is my personal favorite as it has a great melody, and a tune that sticks out much more so than any other song. The positives end there though. "There Could Never" is a sappy album closer that never seems to end. "Never Run My Motor Down" sounds like a reject from her 1987 album, and there is virtually no other song here that you could possibly remember once you listen to the CD a couple of times. Why did this happen? How could they have thought this was marketable at the time? When you compare this to Tiffany's first two albums, the stellar production on the first 2 CDs stand out starkly. Its as if this album was made by a completely different and inept performer! Noticeably, this remains Tiffany's most well-known flop and it yielded no hit singles either. Tiffany would go on to release some acclaimed albums later in her career, but this remains her most shocking mis-step. I can't possibly recommend that you buy this (considering its officially out of print as well), but you might want to get it for about two solid tracks, thats about it. Check out "Dreams Never Die", her album right after this one - its a major improvement.

Tiffany tackles soul with mixed results,
By
This review is from: New Inside (Audio CD)
New Inside came at a time when the Full Force, C&C Music Factory, and Soul II Soul were on the rise, and Tiffany's third album reflected those changes, as most of the songs here sport a new soul/funk sound, such as the title track, where the music's more like early Janet Jackson than the mall pop from her first two albums."It's You" sounds like she's trying to do the Samantha Fox/Full Force thing from two years back, except with keyboards that fit more on a Cover Girls album. Both this track and the previous one clock in over five minutes when four minutes would've been perfect. After a brief symphonic instrumental interlude "A Moment To Rest", we get the ballad "Tenderly", which sports pouring water special effects and keyboards akin to the Human League's "Human", which is more like the Tiffany that's known. The R&B backup singers from the other two songs are still there. A burst of racing synths begins "Never Run My Motor Down" which is an uptempo funk disco song. Some fiery electric guitar enters the mix of this floor burner. A standout cut here. And I was interested to notice one of the co-writers--Andre Cymone, Prince's childhood friend who quit after the Dirty Mind album. The opposite spectrum is reached with the sad tugging strings "Here In My Heart" written by Diane Warren-no wonder why it's so good. "Tiff's Back" complete with rap by the redhead herself, is in the mold of the funky soul Fox/Full Force genre and seems to be a song about why she took two years to get to album #3. A strong song to come back with, although something like this, chartworthy to be in the Top Ten along with Expose, Janet Jackson, or Whitney Houston, probably got buried in the lower half of the charts, if this was a single. "Our Love" and "Life Affair" have the same kind of sound, with the former a bit overlong at just over six minutes. "Back In The Groove" sounds like a classic 70's disco ballad complete with synths and backing singers and I checked the song credits to make sure. Nope, Tiffany co-wrote it. Another standout cut. "just when I thouhgt I'd lose my baby" is reminsicent of Wham's "can't you see I'm falling apart" from "Blue." The seven minutes plus "There's No Other" is a typical late 80's/early 90's R&B ballad with backup singers, with a style like Paula Abdul's "Blowing Kisses In The Wind" or Jody Watley's "Everything." Tiffany's vocals aren't as developed to handle the majority of this stuff, but she scores on "Back in The Groove" and "Here In My Heart" and the two shaking numbers "Never Run My Motor Down" and "Tiff's Back." A bold adventurous third effort, but it's clear to see why it fails. If she didn't try to mix Foxy's mixture with the Cover Girls...

This is by far the best, most underrated Tiffany album I've heard out of them all! 'New Inside' is fun, it's happy, it's upbeat, and when you listen to it you can tell that Tiffany put way more of herself into 'New Inside' than she did her first two albums. Whether she croons in 'Tenderly' and 'Here In My Heart' or rocks it out in 'Never Run My Motor Down', 'New Inside' is a great album with plenty of ear candy for pop/R&B lovers everywhere. It's just such a shame this album didn't get the sales or attention it deserved, because you can tell listening that Tiffany had more fun with this album than with her two previous works. Also recommended; The Color of Silence which is a great pop record that, again, Tiffany put a LOT of herself into.

New Inside was Tiffany's first album after splitting with producer George Tobin. At times the background singers tend to get in the way on this album. There are some pretty bland tracks on the album but also a couple of hidden gems.
Track by track: New Inside-3/5 Would've been better without the "Dennis Cheese" rap. It's You-3/5 Sounds like a generic New Jack Swing song. Co-written by Tiffany herself. A Moment To Rest/ Tenderly-3.5/5 A very intimate and slow song. Never Run My Motor Down-4.5/5 I actually really like this one, it's a fast-paced rocker. Here In My Heart-5/5 A beautiful ballad written by Diane Warren. On par with "Could've Been". Tiff's Back-1/5 Just awful. Essentially a 4 minute shameless plug. Our Love-2/5 A bit generic and tends to drag on. Life Affair-4/5 A solid effort that doesn't wear out its welcome. Back In the Groove-4.5/5 The other song on here that was co-written by Tiffany. This one's a winner. There Could Never-1.5/5- Just like the Energizer bunny, it keeps going and going and going. Didn't the producers think that 7 and a half minutes might be a little long?

Tiff's Back,
This review is from: New Inside (Audio CD)
Nothing like her previous albums, personlly i really love this record out of all tiffany albums. what i relly like about the album is a great depature from her pop roots and turned to new jack swing.
New Inside: Best track off the album with a duet from Dennis Cheese who is Donnie Walhberg, very agressive vocals. 10/10 It's you: Nice song but it sounds too much like Girlfriend by Pebbles. 7/10 A Moment To Rest/Tenderly: This is where the confusion begins with the tracklist.Despite that i really love this song especially when she broke it down. 10/10 Never run my motor Down: Sounds like a left over from Cosmic Thing by B52s 8/10 Here In My heart: Very emotional ballad. 9/10 Tiff's Back: 0/10 Our Love: i really love the song alot 10/10 Life Affair: sequel to Our Love with a new jack number 9/10 Back In The groove: sounds like a NKOTB number but great song tho 10/10 There Could Never: Very seductive song coming from a 19 year old but the longest song for her with alittle Overture towards the end. Overall excellent record despite negative reviews |
