Memories of a jazz nerd....,

This review is from: New Jazz on Campus (Audio CD)
I first listened to Paul Winter's music as a teen-ager who was drawn to the Bossa Nova explosion of the early 60's when Stan Getz produced all of those jazz samba works with Jobim and Gilberto. I originally acquired this album on vinyl after hearing Winter's jazz samba album with Carlos Lyra.
Here was an album that was performed by a bunch of college guys who were only a couple of years older than we were when we were exploring our own musical pathways, and man could they play! This is not a work by the "legends" of jazz, it's just good "coffee house" jazz that brings back memories of a snapshot of the artform as it stood at the beginning of the '60s. Enjoyable, and then some. This isn't for those who follow where Winter's music has gone today. It's where he came from. |
