This is a compelling, well researched exciting account of a group of riff-raff mercenaries, spruced up and unified by a colorful uniform and a resulting nickname, who made a significant contribution to the outcome of the civil war. On a whim I read first the appendix listing the Butterfly boys very varied former occupations and places of origin. To forge an cavalry (and a successful one) from this seemingly unpromising collection of recruits was an amazing feat. The author's selection of photos of people, and especially significant places provide even more insights into the way humble folk and battlefields, little more than streamside clearings, with the right leadership, courage and luck can determine the ultimate course of a war. This book read well and if you are interested in German involvement in the civil war. It is full of surprises and historic connections that make you chuckle or gasp. I read this book seeking my sharp shooter grandfather, but he was not a Hussars. The foreign mercenary part of the civil war is facinating and changed the immigrant face of the nation as well.

Follow the "Butterfly boys" from enlistment to discharge at the end of the war. The author included a list of names with place of origin and the ultimate fate of each
member.

I bought this book after I learned that my great grandfather served in this unit during the Civil War. By describing the circumstances surrounding its formation, the battles and engagements in which it was involved, and the conditions in which the members served, it gave me an insight into a portion of my ancestor's life. That sort of information is of great interest to me as I explore my ancestry.
