When a ninth grader (known in the case by her initials, T.L.O.) was suspected of smoking in the girls' bathroom at school in 1980, an administrator searched her purse, discovering marijuana and articles that indicated the student may have been selling the drug. Upon her school suspension and the bringing of legal charges, T.L.O.'s parents hired an attorney, and thus began five years of legal wrangling that ended up in the Supreme Court because the case involved the constitutional issue of search and seizure. What constitutes a reasonable search? Are schools and juveniles covered by the Fourth Amendment? Can evidence that may have been illegally seized be used in court? Attorneys and judges dissected these issues painstakingly, and the high court eventually upheld the original decision that the search was reasonable.
