Biased, chauvanistic, condescending, August 15, 1999

This review is from: The New Joy of Sex: A Gourmet Guide to Lovemeking in the Nineties -- Compact Edition (Joy of Sex Series) (Hardcover)
The author spends a majority of the book explaining how to please a man than anything ever mentioned about a woman. In most of the sections, it is assumed that the woman will achieve orgasm no matter what the man is doing. Most of the authors' views are totally his own idea, and most of the women I know of will not go for not shaving the armpits and not wearing deodorant. The author may feel that body odor is sexy, however, the general public does not. Most of the sexual talk in the book is more a history of how the position came to be, than how to actually perform the act, and even when there is a description on how to perform it, the author uses such a language that the reader doesn't understand or gets bored before it can be achieved. Constantly referring to the woman's genitals as a "pussy" and making little or no reference to the male's genitals, one gets the impression that the author is directing the attention of the book towards the male population. Personally, the saving grace of this book was the pictures. Without the illustrations, this book would have been a bore and a waste of money.

Disappointing, December 21, 1999

I thought that turning to a "standard" book to spice up the bedroom would be a sure bet, but I was sadly disappointed by this book. The focus was almost solely on male pleasure, with virtually no time spent on the female orgasm. I would be far more likely to reccommend _The Magic of Sex_ by Dr. Miriam Stoppard as a comprehensive sex manual. That which is good in Comfort's book is not unique and that which is unique isn't that great.

Three books, three hits --- a home run!, February 16, 1999

This review is from: The New Joy of Sex: A Gourmet Guide to Lovemeking in the Nineties -- Compact Edition (Joy of Sex Series) (Hardcover)
This book was part of a package I bought to improve my sex life. The New Joy of Sex turned out to be a lovemaking primer - or a lovemaking refresher, in my case. Another book, 101 Nights of Great Sex, was just for fun. Great as a gift, great to spice up a boring sex life. Great games to play. Finally, a somewhat more serious approach is "Five Minutes to Orgasm Every Time You Make Love" which I wanted because the promise was an easier, faster orgasm which most women need, at least some time. Although the book deals with difficulty reaching orgasm, the approach is light-hearted and fun. The technique worked for me and my current lover. Each book presents a different approach, all very helpful.
