Book Description

August 1989
Teenage immigrants from various countries recount the emotional experience of fleeing their homelands and adjusting to a new life in the United States.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up-- In this fascinating volume, 11 teenagers from all over the world talk about their experiences as immigrants to the United States. Each narrative is introduced by a paragraph giving a brief background of the immigrant's country of origin, but other than that, the stories are told by the kids themselves. The diverse personalities and attitudes of the narrators are obvious, and range from intense sincerity to arrogance and insensitivity. The subjects' experiences are as diverse as their origins and personalities; the common denominators among them are their families' desire to have a better life in a new country and the ridicule and hostility they have encountered as they tried to become part of a new culture. The information presented will be difficult for most students to incorporate into reports, and the subject does not lend itself to impulse selection. However this will booktalk well, and should be part of most school and public library collections. --Trish Ebbatson, Delaware County District Library, OH
