5.0 out of 5 stars Another 'blockhead' opinion?
Well, yes, I'm afraid this is pretty much so. I've been a fan of New Kids for 14 years now so, what can I say? Anybody taking a look at this product knows what they're dealing with. In spite of many people's opinion on these guys I really like them, the boys they were, the men they turned to be. And it was only through Amazon that I got a chance to purchase this cd. All...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not brilliant writing, but it's fun
I've been a NK fan since I was 16 years old. No, their music wasn't brilliant, but it was geared towards a young crowd, and most of the guys were pretty young, as well. The first album was pretty corny, but it's so much fun to listen to and laugh at the lyrics!! I still pop my cd in once and awhile and reminice. Jordan's voice rings clear as a bell on "Didn't I...

5.0 out of 5 stars Another 'blockhead' opinion?, August 8, 2005

Well, yes, I'm afraid this is pretty much so. I've been a fan of New Kids for 14 years now so, what can I say? Anybody taking a look at this product knows what they're dealing with. In spite of many people's opinion on these guys I really like them, the boys they were, the men they turned to be. And it was only through Amazon that I got a chance to purchase this cd. All bubble gum? All popsicle? All eighties? Yeah! Highly recommendable, I'd say. So I am absolutely thankful: with NKOTB, for their music; with Amazon for the perfect and easy delivery; and with you, for reading this. See you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest Album Ever....., January 28, 2005
This review is from: New Kids on the Block (Audio CD)
This album was one of the first albums I ever had and it brings back great memories for me. From start to finish, it is full of energy, great tunes, and nostalga of the greatest band ever. My original cassette was destroyed, I have spent many years searching down a CD copy of New Kids On The Block self-titled album. Most of my friends (and fellow NKOTB fans) don't even realize that this album exists..........IF YOU HAVE ANY SENSE, YOU WILL PURCHASE THIS ALBUM, BELIEVE ME, IT IS WORTH IT. Come see where the band started............Come back NKOTB, come back.

4.0 out of 5 stars Actually Really Very Good Most Of The Time, June 5, 2011
This review is from: New Kids on the Block (Audio CD)
Culturally growing up this band was basically the domain of 5'th grade girls-little more than a pin up act to be made fun of. Seeing it go down and not batting much of an eyelash I have no real intention of judging this album based on it's popular impact but rather on it's musical value. Honesly I didn't even know they WENT this far back until I myself was in my late teens. Years later learning they were masterminded by Maurice Starr as sort of a replacement for the (by 1986) aging New Edition I decided to give this now rare CD a go after finding a water damaged copy at my local Goodwill. Hard to say this but I realized how I am a bit influenced by my cultural past when I felt mild guilt after that purchase. That went away quick. And putting this on,expecting at best something ignorable in the backround or at worst a mild chuckle I was surprised to find out this album is not half bad at all and in many ways genuinely funky.

New Kids On The Block don't sound anything like New Edition vocally. Sorry to say they have somewhat better voices and than "little" Joey McIntyre, still with braces during this time had a youthful, expressive and rather soulful voice that Ralph Tresvant didn't quite possess early in his career. Before their sound was made to sound too deliberately edgy on their commercial breakthrough Hangin Tough this album finds the quintet actually handling music more appropriate to their backround and age. Most of the songs such as the opener "Stop It Girl",Popsicle" and "Don't Give Up On Me" are actually pretty sharp, flowing mid decade synth funk-pop and some excellent vocal exchanges and identity. Although no one will ever mistaken it for classic Northern soul they actually survive a version of "(Didn't I) Blow Your Mind This Time" and survive with little to no embarrassment. I actually enjoyed listening to it. One song that's the band's name sake and "Are You Down" are actually competant teen "white" hip-hop and "Treat Me Right" has McIntyre giving a go to a retro 50's rock and soul shuffle similar to MJ's "Rockin' Robin".

My experience listening to this album emphasized a valuable lesson to me,something I've know for years and sometimes forgotton. And that is that one really shouldn't allow the pop music press or cultural reputation guide ones yay or nay as it were on a particular musical act. After hearing this album I have to say there's a chance that NKOTB have been judged very harshly and unfairly. Now as I learned here on Amazon with some...let's just say highly unpopular viewpoints on the Nirvana phenomenon culture does sadly seem too often to dictate taste. Still referring to this album, which I honestly enjoy and don't consider the LEAST bit of a guilty pleasure if your a fan of youthful mid 80's pop-funk with a lot of hooks, electronics and a strong hip-hop influence or really enjoy that New Edition/Maurice Starr sound of the era this album will likely have a strong appeal for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A 14 yr.old fan!, June 20, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: New Kids on the Block (Audio CD)
I love this tape! However, it is not as good as NKOTB's later albums. My favorite song is "Popsicle". I recommend this CD to all New Kids fans. I am a huge fan of them myself. Being only 14, I wasn't around for long during the New Kids era. They are, in my opinion, better than the boybands of today.

This album totally brings me back! It is so cute! My favorite song is Didn't I (Blow your mind this time) & I wanna Be Loved by You. It is so good to me being a major New Kids fan since I was in elementary school in the 80's to hear them when they first started. This is a must buy for anyone!
