Book Description

January 16, 1996 0787901849 978-0787901844 1st
By the year 2000, white males will represent less than one third of the American workforce. In this universally praised work, Ann Morrison, co-author of Breaking The Glass Ceiling, becomes the first to offer companies practical strategies for moving tomorrow's new leaders -- white women and people of color -- into the executive ranks. Using personal interviews with nearly 200 managers in organizations noted for their model diversity programs, Morrison presents a very definite, step-by-step action plan that will prove invaluable to leaders looking to guide their businesses into the next century.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Reflecting Morrison's views on how to improve business practices, her third book offers advice possibly more helpful than Breaking the Glass Ceiling (about striving female professionals) and The Lessons of Experience (about successful executives). Here she concentrates on persuading management to promote and reward "people of color" and women, who are usually overlooked because of ethnic backgrounds or gender. Morrison spells out the benefits of leadership diversity to managers and employees, giving examples of working relationships, quoting interviews with leaders and persons moving up the corporate and/or government ladder and supplying statistics in an extensive text. As director of a study group at the Center for Creative Leadership in La Jolla, Calif., the author bases her guidelines on the organization's research.

From Library Journal

This book builds on Breaking the Glass Ceiling (Addison-Wesley, 1987), which Morrison coauthored, and addresses issues of concern to white women and people of color. It is based on a study involving 16 organizations (both profit and nonprofit) identified as role models in diversity in management. The book is organized in three parts. The first discusses organizational benefits of developing diversity. The next part presents a strategy designed to make upper-level management positions available to nontraditional managers. The last part suggests specific steps to design and implement a diversity plan. Effective coverage of an important topic for the future; recommended for practitioners and students of management.

This review is from: The New Leaders: Leadership Diversity in America (Jossey-Bass Business & Management Series) (Paperback)
This was a required book for a leadership course. To Morrison's credit, it is full of VERY specific advice and a step-by-step plan for companies to set and reach diversity goals. I was kind of surprised that she didn't spend much time on what exactly diversity is and why it is a noble goal besides the fact that we live in a diverse society, hence diversity. Before you know it, you're knee deep in a multitude of case studies and descriptions of how entrenched stereotypes of Hispanics, blacks and Asians can interfere with diversity efforts. I wouldn't exacty call it lively reading, but from a pragmatic standpoint, it does offer companies a good blueprint for how to put in a realistic diversity plan from many angles.

In short, a useful book for managers or leaders in charge of spreading the gospel who need a model for making major changes. By reading about other companies' mistakes, I imagine others will be more fortunate in terms of avoiding these pitfalls.
