5.0 out of 5 stars Compassionate NICU Nurse
I have a little bit of experience with newborns in the NICU...as a grandmother. Reading these short accounts of NICU babies from the nurse's perspective is heart warming...and needed not a few Kleenex!
This author-nurse's insistence that the whole family unit be and integral part of her NICU nursing is so important; my daughter's experience at Cardinal Glennon...

3.0 out of 5 stars interesting subject matter but weak narratives
Although clearly geared toward prospective nurses, I think this collection will be of interest to the general public. The stories are emotionally powerful and many are incredibly heartbreaking. Although clearly geared toward prospective nurses, I think this collection will be of interest to the general public. The stories are emotionally powerful and many are incredibly heartbreaking. However, I found narrative perspectives to be, on average, quite dry and detached. Also, each entry is very brief and makes the volume feel rushed. I often wished for more detail, background or follow-up. But perhaps that's the compartmentalized nature of medicine today?

This review is from: New Lives: Nurses' Stories about Caring for Babies (Kaplan Voices) (Paperback)
This is a collection of real-life stories written by nurses that work with newborns. Some of them will make you cry. All of them are interesting.

This author-nurse's insistence that the whole family unit be and integral part of her NICU nursing is so important; my daughter's experience at Cardinal Glennon Hospital's NICU (St. Louis) demonstrated that perfectly. This hospital realizes they have a troubled baby AND a distressed mommy who gave birth just a few hours before. They took good care of both...and I imagine this author would applaud their processes.
